When good design is effectively brought together with exciting printing and finishing techniques, they can make you feel something profound. It’s a partnership nearly as profound as that enjoyed between guide dogs and the visually impaired people whom they serve. It’s a point compellingly made by the intricate cover of this notebook, which holds a delightful surprise for those who receive it when they donate to Israel’s Guide Dog Center.

Closed, the cover displays the face of a dog comprised of what looks like multi-colored stained-glass shards. Lift the cover, however, and you quickly discover that what you’ve been looking at is an intricately laser-cut sheet of 300 gm (200 lb.) Black Favini Burano paper resting atop a second – digitally printed – sheet. That paper not only contains the same dog illustration, but also a full-body side-view of the animal AND a man – all in the same geometric-pattern style.
The message is crystal clear: this is a colorful celebration of the special relationship between the visually impaired and their guide dogs.
“We wanted to design this piece as a present for donors, a piece with value – something to use and keep,” explains Tal Huber, founder of design studio Giraff, which created the piece.
Sabine Lenz is the founder of PaperSpecs.com, the first online paper database and community specifically designed for paper specifiers.
Growing up in Germany, Sabine started her design career in Frankfurt, before moving to Australia and then the United States. She has worked on design projects ranging from corporate identities to major road shows and product launches. From start-ups to Fortune 500 companies, her list of clients included Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Deutsche Bank, IBM and KPMG.
Seeing designers struggle worldwide to stay current with new papers and paper trends inspired Sabine to create PaperSpecs, an independent and comprehensive Web-based paper database and weekly e-newsletter. She is also a speaker on paper issues and the paper industry. Some refer to her lovingly as the "paper queen" who combines her passion for this wonderful substrate called paper with a hands-on approach to sharing her knowledge.
