Pulling a Winner Out Of Its Digital Press
Xerox Corp. has named Lorraine Press, a Salt Lake City-based commercial printing operation, as "Best of Show" winner in its Printing Innovation with Xerox Imaging Awards. An independent panel of experts awarded Lorraine Press the highest combined ratings for its winning piece, the "Marvello Flipbook Invitation."
Printed on a Xerox DocuColor 8000 digital press using a Creo color server, QuarkXPress software and Darwin design tools, the innovative direct mail piece invited potential customers to the printer's open house. Four different versions were created—each with a colorful magic theme—and each copy was personalized for the intended recipient.
F.C.L. Graphics, Harwood Heights, IL, has created a new management team led by President Ken Menconi. The new team consists of Phil Bauman, vice president of operations; Dino DeVivo, vice president of production; and Mike Dato, vice president of purchasing.
James Blessington has been named general manager of Wisconsin Web Offset (WWO), Brookfield, WI. Blessington, who joined WWO in 1999, has served in various management capacities at the company, including IT project administrator and systems administration.
New York University's Center for Graphic Arts Management and Technology announced the election of Diane Romano, group managing director of Schawk, and Terry Tevis, president of T.A. Tevis & Co., as co-chairpersons of the Center's board of directors. They succeed interim chairman Michael Cunningham, CEO, Entrepreneurial Advisors. He served in that post following the departure of Jeff Jacobson, COO, Graphic Communications Group, Kodak, who stepped down from the chairmanship earlier this year.
The Printing Industries of Maryland (PIM) and Printing and Graphic Communications Association (P&GCA) have merged to create the Printing and Graphics Association MidAtlantic (PGAMA). The new trade association will serve more than 500 graphic arts firms. Randy Cogar has been elected PGAMA chairman.
H. Christopher Pape, president and CEO of Rochester, NY-based Monroe Litho, has been elected chairman of the board of directors for the Printing and Imaging Association of New York (PIA-NY). Pape will serve in this position for the next two years.
KPEX Digital Marketing, a division of Kohler Print Group in St. Louis, has added Judy Leise to its staff as an account executive.
Future Graphics in Zebulon, NC, was awarded the Wausau Paper Award of Excellence for exemplary use of paper in a print application. Future Graphics produced the "The Campaign for the Meredith College Pocket Folder" piece using Wausau Royal Complements 100-lb. cover, vellum finish, in Midnight Blue. The piece was printed using a double hit of metallic PMS 8163 ink on a five-color Heidelberg press.
National Graphics of Brookfield, WI, and Travel Tags have settled all issues related to their outstanding patent litigation. Under the settlement, Travel Tags has accepted a royalty-bearing, worldwide, non-exclusive license under the patents in suit and other National Graphics patents, and National Graphics has accepted from Travel Tags a covenant not to sue under certain Travel Tags pending patent applications. The settlement will allow both parties to sell lenticular products worldwide.
Coakley-Tech in Milwaukee has promoted Rosemary Pearson to the position of manager of client services. John Gits has been hired as a new business development executive. Also, Richard Allcox has joined Mary Morgan in Green Bay, WI, a Coakley-Tech owned company, as print production manager.
The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) announces Dr. Cynthia Gillispie-Johnson, chair of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State College's Department of Graphic Communication Systems and Technological Studies, as the recipient of its 2005 Educator of the Year award.
Mohawk Fine Papers announced the winners of its sixth annual Mohawk Show. From over 1,000 entries, there were five Best of Show pieces selected, which included the traditional top four winners plus this year's special Environmental Excellence Award, along with 19 finalists. Printers of the Best of Show pieces include: Dr. Graphx/Martin Stuart Decal, for Morningstar Posters; The Hennigan Co. for Tiffany 2005 Spring Mailer and Herman Miller See Magazine, Fall 2004; Warren's Imaging and Dryography, for Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies; and Penfold Buscombe, for "Stuff."
