NEEDHAM, MA—Atlantic Printing is in its final stage of transition toward a “totally green” offset printing process. Atlantic employs a combination of chemical-free plate making technology (Agfa’s Accento thermal CTP system, which utilizes Agfa’s Azura chemical-free plates), 100 percent soy-based inks (a renewable source that is naturally low in VOCs) and recycled papers (the printer has obtained Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of- Custody certification).
CANTON, MA—Several “green” initiatives, including garnering the Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification, have been implemented at Next Generation Printing. The company is also using more recycled papers, including a new “house stock” FSC-certified mixed sheet with 50 percent recycled content, of which 25 percent is post-consumer content. Additionally, Nextgen’s facility is using all new Energystar-rated HVAC equipment.
CARY, NC—Cary Printing is reportedly the first printer in the United States to be awarded the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), an international forest management certification. It is awarded to organizations that demonstrate sustainable forest management through environmentally, socially beneficial and economically viable business practices. The company also received Chain-of-Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification.
HOUSTON—Consolidated Graphics has signed a strategic partnership with AmericanForests.org, which works to protect, restore and enhance the natural capital of trees and forests. CGX has also secured Forest Stewardship Council certifications for all of its 68 facilities. In addition, the company’s Internet-based CGXSolutions CrossMedia technology will enable customers and investors to participate in a campaign where CGX will plant a tree through AmericanForests.org for those individuals who opt-in to the program from a special CGX Website.
HAUPPAUGE, NY—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Disc Graphics as an EPA Green Power Partner for its purchase of green power, which was more than 575,000 kilowatt hours. Disc Graphics also recently received the Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification.
ST. LOUIS—Garlich Printing has received Chain-of-Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, the most recent achievement in its environmental conservation efforts. Garlich Printing also does on-site recycling of waste paper, aluminum plates and solvents. In addition, all of its presses are equipped with the Accel Sentinel Ink Management System, which reduces ink waste.
ADDISON, TX—Employing green practices for years, Best Press recycles more than 8 tons of aluminum printing plates annually, saving more than 101,000 kilowatt hours of electricity, and recycles 65-70 tons of paper each month, saving more than 1,000 trees. Most recently, Best Press has obtained Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative certifications.
WASECA, MN—Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification has been awarded to all three of Brown Printing’s facilities, including the one located here, as well as in East Greenville, PA, and Woodstock, IL. Brown Printing also participates in other earth-friendly procedures, such as “virtual” proofing, which eliminates paper proofs, and co-mailing, which results in distribution efficiencies.
STUART, FL—Southeastern Printing recently received Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification. The company also engages in other green practices, such as using vegetable-based inks and recycling 98 percent of its waste paper. The printer also recycles 100 percent of its press solvents, which are reprocessed, reducing the chemical waste by 95 percent.
The former senior vice president of sales with Web Plus in Atlanta, Steven Kubalik, is now the new president and CEO at Dallas Offset. The company welcomes Kubalik, a printing industry veteran with 30 years of experience in sales and executive management.
The Printing Industries Association of San Diego (PIA/SD), several members of which are pictured below at a recent sporting event, re-elected Boyd Richardson of RR Donnelley as chairman of the board, replacing Bill Anderson, president of L+L Printers, immediate past chairman. Other elected officials include vice chairman, Chris Hamm, owner/president of Tabs Etc.; and secretary-treasurer, Greg Gould, owner/president of Eye/Comm. The new board of directors are: Dave Pauley of Neyenesch Printers, Angela Benson of Nationwide Papers, Richard True of Komori America, Arthur Hill of Birmingham Press, Steve Laethem of Creative Coatings, Greg Steinke of VQS Enterprises, Brad Reimers of SOS Printing and Frank Scorzelli of Specialist Printing & Direct Mail.
Jim Monti has been named senior vice president at Flower City Printing, Rochester, NY. As a 23-year printing industry veteran, Monti has served as vice president of sales at firms including RR Donnelley, Perry Judd’s, The Dingley Press and Quebecor World.
AtlasBooks of Ashland, OH, which is a division of BookMasters Inc., recently named Randall McKenzie as national sales manager. McKenzie, who previously worked with BookWorld and Meredith, has managed national accounts for more than 20 years. In his new position, he will oversee the sales force and focus on new marketing strategies.
Baltimore-based Vertis Communications has hired Damon Synder as vice president of operations at its Chalfont, PA, Direct Marketing division. Snyder formerly served as president of Lehigh Direct, where he drove record sales for the company in 2004.
Wayne Peterson is the new business solutions developer, national accounts, at Los Alamitos, CA-based Trend Offset Printing. In the newly created position, Peterson will target multi-title publishers and Fortune 1000 companies.
The newly created position of executive vice president of mailing/fulfillment services at Vermillion Inc., a Derry, NH-based marketing communications firm, is being filled by Christine Erna. As an 18-year analyst in mail piece design with the U.S. Postal Service, she is certified as a mail-piece quality control specialist, as well as an address quality specialist. Prior to joining Vermillion, Erna was vice president of sales and marketing at Fulfillment, Print and Mailing Solutions.
Boulder, CO-based Signature Offset has hired Paul Lefler as the new plant manager of its Hattiesburg, MS, facility. Lefler is a web offset industry veteran, who most recently served as operations manager at Sound Publishing.
