Pumping Up Capabilities, Profitability
NEW HAVEN, CT—To bridge the gap between its 40? offset presses and toner-based digital devices, The Harty Press installed a new Presstek 52DI digital offset press. The printing, direct mail and marketing communications company had purchased an older model Presstek DI machine several years ago and wanted to upgrade to the 52DI to take advantage of its increased speed (prints up to 10,000 iph) and automation, as well as the larger sheet size, which is a 52cm landscape format (maximum sheet size of 20.47x14.17?).
“The larger sheet size not only expands the range of jobs we can produce, but it also means we can have more efficient imposition of full-bleed jobs, such as multiple-up printing of 6x9? postcards,” says George Platt, co-owner of The Harty Press.
CALIFORNIA
CHINO—More than 80 distributors were given a tour of the new 46,000-square-foot facility during an open house held recently by Wright Business Graphics of California. The larger plant will allow the printer to expand its manufacturing, warehousing and distribution capabilities.

BROADVIEW—To create a highly automated, cohesive workflow with its other Kodak unified workflow solutions, Rapid Impressions Printing Arts has added Kodak EMS business management software.
IOWA
DES MOINES—Installing its second Xerox iGen3 digital production press, CDS Global decided to also purchase the Xerox Cover-Driven Workflow and a C.P. Bourg in-line perfect binder. The customized workflow solution, powered by Xerox’s FreeFlow Process Manager, allows CDS Global’s customer, SmartMoney, to provide investors with customized covers on their personalized financial portfolios.
KENTUCKY
LOUISVILLE—A new two-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 press and Stahlfolder TH 82 folder have been purchased by Multi Packaging Solutions.
WALTON—Continental Web is doubling output and increasing productivity with its new Kodak Magnus VLF Quantum platesetter with Multi- Cassette Unit.
MASSACHUSETTS
BOSTON—The management and production staff of BFS Business Printing are praising the company’s new five-color Komori Spica 529P perfecting press, which features a compact footprint and fast makeready capabilities.
CANTON—A five-color Heidelberg Printmaster PM 52 perfector has been added at Next Generation Printing.
MINNESOTA
MINNEAPOLIS—Gannett Offset Minneapolis added an M-1000 web press that is capable of generating 32-page signatures, enabling the printer to compete for high-end catalog and niche publication work.
NEW BRIGHTON—A new six-color Komori Lithrone S40 (LS640) has replaced two older-model presses at Modern Press.
ST. LOUIS PARK—Japs-Olson Co. has selected DiMS! to implement its MIS and ERP software package, as well as its Direct Machine Interface that integrates with real-time scheduling.

KANSAS CITY—Strahm Automation and Mailing Services, a provider of document composition, handling and delivery services, has acquired an Océ ColorStream 10000 digital printer to respond to the growing demand for high-quality, color, transactional business documents.
NEW YORK
TROY—As a leading producer of science, technical and medical journals, execs from Integrated Book Technology attended Drupa 2008 and purchased a new HP Indigo 7000 digital press, along with the HP SmartStream Production Pro print server.
NORTH CAROLINA
ROCKY MOUNT—Eagle Press has purchased four two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 offset presses, installing two at its facility here and two in its Tualatin, OR, plant.
PENNSYLVANIA
YORK—Anstadt Printing is now running a new six-color Komori Lithrone SX29 (LSX 629) offset press with coating capabilities.
TEXAS
TEMPLE—After nearly a decade of success with its existing two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 offset press, PaperGraphics Printing has acquired a new QM 46 model.
WASHINGTON
MARYSVILLE—After generating more than 65 million impressions with its older model, two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 offset press, Marysville Printing replaced it with a pair of new two-color QM 46 presses.
