Citiprint Press Addition Makes Big Impact
ALLENTOWN, PA—Citiprint purchased a four-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 with coater to complement a two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 installed in 2004, when the company first opened. Shabir Sumar, co-owner, says the added capability has been instrumental in attracting new customers and producing larger format work for its existing clients.
Fong Brothers’ Packaging Niche Expands
BRISBANE, CA—Catering to major corporate clients and advertising agencies, Fong Brothers Printing has expanded its packaging and folding carton printing capabilities. The company installed a new six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000LX sheetfed press, which handles stocks ranging from 0.002˝ to 0.040˝ thick, including paper, board and synthetic substrates. “We print a lot of product boxes for the technology industry,” says Tony Fong, president. “This press will allow us to print regular commercial projects, but also will provide greater flexibility in the types and sturdiness of the cartons the company can produce.”
ALABAMA
MONTGOMERY—Davis Direct, celebrating its 80th year in business, invested in a new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 with coater. The press, which will produce short-run publication and direct mail work, is complemented with an all-Heidelberg bindery.
ARIZONA
PHOENIX—A rebuilt six-color, 38˝ Harris M-300M full-web press with pattern perforator, double former folder, combination folder and sheeter is now up and running at Century Graphics. The rebuild, performed by Monroe Graphics, also includes new digital drives and GMI color control.
TEMPE—The recent expansion of its facility from 4,500 square feet to 10,000 square feet has given commercial printer Impression Makers the room to add a new two-color Heidelberg Printmaster PM 52 press and a Suprasetter A52 platesetter driven by the Prinect Printready, MetaDimension and Signa Station workflow solutions.
ARKANSAS
LITTLE ROCK—Magazine and catalog printer Democrat Printing & Lithographing has purchased a new Goss Sunday 4000 press, which is a 32-page, single-web, double-circumference press with gapless technology.
CALIFORNIA
CLAREMONT—A 10-color Mitsubishi Diamond 3000TP tandem perfector with twin coating units has been installed at Phoenix Marketing Services, a commercial printer and marketing solutions provider that services such high-profile clients as Princess Cruises, Disney Entertainment, Pacific Life Insurance and the San Diego Chargers.
COMPTON—Color City, a four-year-old commercial printer that also specializes in trade printing for brokers and customized advertising products, has added a six-color, 28˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 1000LS sheetfed press with in-line aqueous coater.
GARDENA—A second highly automated Goss M-600 web press is being added at Southwest Offset Printing. The new eight-unit, two-web model features the Autoplate fully automatic plate-changing system, closed-loop controls, Goss Web Center components for automated presetting and Ecocool dryer with integrated chill rolls. A JF-45 folder with a 4/8 page module will allow the press to produce four- to 32-page signatures.
SAN DIEGO—The staff of BPI, formerly known as Bob’s Printing Inc., marked the company’s half century in the commercial printing business by inviting clients and guests to a 50th anniversary celebration.
FLORIDA
TAMPA—To expand its capabilities in high-volume personalized marketing materials production, MLI Integrated Graphic Solutions has installed an HP Indigo press 5000. Management sees it as a “hybrid” digital solution, noting that it meets the same image quality and brand color requirements as the shop’s offset work.
GEORGIA
ATLANTA—Stevens Graphics has added a new in-line roll sheeter to the eight-color Mitsubishi Model 3000TP tandem perfector press at its facility in Birmingham, AL. The company is reportedly the nation’s third largest directory printer and is a subsidiary of AT&T.
BRUNSWICK—Creative Printing recently installed a four-color Heidelberg Printmaster PM 74 press with automatic plate changing and washup, a Suprasetter A74 platesetter and Prinect workflow.
ILLINOIS
WHEELING—Technique Inc.’s full suite of MIS modules and shop floor data capture solutions have been added at Segerdahl Corp., a direct mail provider.
MAINE
AUGUSTA—J.S. McCarthy Printers has purchased an eight-color Komori Lithrone S40 perfector for producing eight-color jobs with spot or special colors, as well for 4/4 perfecting. Rick Tardiff, president, is so pleased with the productivity of the new press, another Komori—this one a straight eight-color Lithrone—is scheduled for delivery early next year.
MASSACHUSETTS
LOWELL—A SAMI inserter from Buck Automation has been installed by DS Graphics for added flexibility in producing direct mail work. The printer also recently installed a Xerox iGen3 digital color press to expand its print-on-demand capabilities.
MINNESOTA
PLYMOUTH—To add capacity and boost productivity, especially for long-run brochures and POP materials, Daily Printing recently acquired a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 press with Image Control and coating unit. The company also plans to install a Heidelberg Suprasetter MCL platesetter and full prepress workflow—Prinect Printready, MetaDimension and SignaStation.
ST. CLOUD—A new five-color, 40˝ Komori LS40 press with aqueous coater is up and running at Palmer Printing, a second-generation, family owned business. The new press features fully automated plate changers and an in-line PDC-S SpectroDensitometer.
NEW JERSEY
CARLSTADT—Pictorial Offset, which has been on the forefront of the environmental movement for the past 25 years, has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Quality Award (the highest award from the EPA) for demonstrating outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing the environmental quality in its region.
NEW YORK
GARDEN CITY—Commercial and calendar printer Unicorn Graphics recently acquired a new six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press with aqueous coating and hybrid UV capabilities for its newly acquired and renovated 30,000-square-foot facility here.
FARMINGDALE—Motion Imaging, a manufacturer of 3-D motion lenticular products, has posted more than one million impressions of lenticular sheets on its KBA Genius 52 UV waterless press in less than a year. Increased business due to the press addition has propelled the business to a two-shift operation and will necessitate a move from the printer’s current facility to a larger, 35,000-square-foot facility early next year.
NEW YORK—Last month, Graphic Systems Group, a leading production, imaging and design firm with clients that include Citibank, Elizabeth Arden, Maybelline and NBC, played host to former President Bill Clinton at the company’s Union Square headquarters. Mr. Clinton was there on tour, promoting his new book “Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World.” He personally autographed copies of his book for the GSG staff and received a tour of the firm’s 40,000-square-foot facility.
NEW YORK—A new Kluge EHF Series foil stamping, embossing and diecutting press, from Brandtjen & Kluge, has been installed at 1-800 Postcards. The company configured the press with optional hologram capabilities and grid-etched toggle base.
ROCHESTER—Ry-Gan Printing, a trade printer, has installed a new Halm Superjet Plus XL envelope perfecting press to produce specialty envelopes and handle longer runs for its clients.
ROME—Business communications provider Cathedral Corp. is printing a half million postcards with inspirational artwork from children ages 6-14, as part of Xerox Corp.’s “Let’s Say Thanks” (to our troops) program. The postcards, printed on an iGen3 digital press, are included in “care packages” sent to U.S. forces overseas by the military support organization Give2TheTroops.
NORTH CAROLINA
GREENSBORO—A new six-color, 64˝ MAN Roland 900 XXL, equipped with in-line coating and extended delivery, is enabling Carolina Graphic Services to bolster its commercial, packaging and label printing capabilities.
TABOR CITY—Atlantic Packaging has purchased a new Kluge TXR-1100 Series automatic blank separator from Brandtjen & Kluge.
OHIO
REYNOLDSBURG—To expand into digital printing, with particular interest in one-to-one marketing and print-on-demand applications, commercial printer PXP Ohio bought a new Kodak NexPress 2100 Plus digital production color press.
TEXAS
AUSTIN—McCarthy Print hosted more than 150 clients at an open house to introduce and celebrate the arrival of its new press—a five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 perfector.
HOUSTON—Four NELA VCP Vision plate punch/benders with 48-position, up-and-down stackers have been installed at the Houston Chronicle in connection with four Agfa Polaris CTP systems.
LUBBOCK—Copy Craft Printers has purchased several Hewlett-Packard products, including a six-color HP Indigo press 5000, HP Designjet 5500 large-format printer and a Videojet PrintMail WideArray mailing system equipped with HP thermal ink-jet heads. It also added UV coating capabilities and a complete digital bindery.
WASHINGTON
MUKILTEO—Adpro Litho, a trade print shop with 27 employees, has invested in a new six-color Heidelberg SM 52 perfector plus coater, which the owner reports is doing the work of two older presses combined, printing multicolor newsletters, booklets, postcards, posters and brochures.
