PHOENIX—Panoramic Press, a 50-year-old firm specializing in high-end commercial printing, has added a five-color Mitsubishi Diamond 1000LS press with in-line coater.
COLORADO
DENVER—Two Kodak Trendsetter News 100 platesetters and workflow systems have a new home at the Denver Newspaper Agency for its commercial division to print commercial products, as well as the New York Times.
DELAWARE
DOVER—Independent Newspapers has incorporated an unusual configuration into its new five-high KBA Colora web press. The configuration combines the productivity of a double-width 4/2 press with the flexibility of a single-width press, resulting in runs with fewer webs and fewer operators.
HAWAII
WAILUKU—The Ogden Newspapers purchased a Trendsetter News 70 platesetter and Prinergy EVO workflow system for The Maui News and other newspapers. This is its second Kodak thermal CTP device.
IDAHO
HOMEDALE—Newspaper publisher Owyhee Publishing has installed a Screen PlateRite News 2000 thermal platesetter. Owyhee Publishing prints the Owyhee Avalanche, as well as area weeklies and shoppers.
INDIANA
GREENFIELD—The Manugraph DGM press at the Greenfield Daily Reporter now boasts a newly installed QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam and QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam, purchased to cut down on paper waste.
MICHIGAN
SOUTHFIELD—A new Heidelberg Prosetter SCL 74 violet platesetter with MetaDimension RIP is now producing plates for an existing Heidelberg Speedmaster 74 DI press at Addison Graphic Solutions.
MINNESOTA
MINNEAPOLIS—Smyth Companies, founded by Henry Martin Smyth, is celebrating 130 years in the printing business. Since 1877, Smyth has shifted its focus from bond certificates, books and maps to package labels for mass-marketed consumer goods and other in-store merchandising material. The company also has manufacturing facilities in Virginia and Colorado.
MISSOURI
JEFFERSON CITY—An older model, two-color press was replaced with a new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 52 perfector with coater at Brown Printing.
VALLEY PARK—An HP Indigo 5000 digital press has been installed at Nies/Artcraft Companies’ Valcour facility. The seven-color press is capable of producing high-definition images on a wide range of paper stocks and weights from 45 lbs. to 130 lbs.
NEW JERSEY
CARLSTADT—UNIMAC Graphics has been certified as a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody company by SmartWood.
CLIFTON—As a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Leaders program, Sandy Alexander has pledged to further reduce its total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent per dollar of revenue from 2006 to 2012.
ELMWOOD PARK—Nitka Graphics relocated to a larger headquarters, where the shop went from 5,000 to more than 10,000 square feet. It also purchased a five-color Speedmaster SM 74 perfector with tower coater, as well as some new bindery equipment.
NEW YORK
AMHERST—A newly installed five-color Komori Lithrone 28 press with coater is up and running at Grover Cleveland Press. Company execs report that the machine is already enhancing the printer’s level of efficiency, automation and versatility.
BINGHAMTON—Parlor City Paper Box is expanding its customer base and reducing makeready times after acquiring its second KBA sheetfed offset press: a seven-color, 41˝ Rapida 105 prepared for hybrid UV.
ORCHARD PARK—A new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with coater is now running at Boncraft Inc. The press is equipped with the Prinect CP 2000 Center with Instant Gate and Prepress Interface connection, and Prinect Image Control spectral-photometric color measurement and control system.
WEST HENRIETTA—Cohber Press celebrated its 75th anniversary by investing in a new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with aqueous coater, which is reportedly improving run speed by 200 percent and makeready times by 40 percent. A high-end commercial printer whose clientele consist mainly of advertising agencies and Fortune 500 companies, Cohber is an all-Heidelberg shop running two to 10 colors.
PENNSYLVANIA
BRADFORD—Bradford Publishing has implemented a Screen PlateRite News 2000 thermal platesetter to streamline its prepress workflow. Bradford Publishing prints the Bradford Era, Olean Times Herald and Salamanca Press, in addition to grocery inserts and numerous commercial projects.
EMIGSVILLE—A fully automated Screen PlateRite 8600 CTP device, using Fujifilm’s LH-PJ thermal plates, is now in operation at WorkflowOne’s facility here. The nation’s largest provider of print and promotional products, WorkflowOne also specializes in printing business forms, checks, labels and sales collateral.
TEXAS
DALLAS—Padgett Printing is one of the first printers in Texas to be certified as a chain-of-custody company by the SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance, meeting the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
FORT WORTH—Motivating Graphics has purchased a new Woodward Model P5468 jogger aerator, which can handle sheet sizes up to 54x68˝ and load weights up to 6,000 lbs. It was added to complement a new 12-color press that was recently installed.
WASHINGTON
EVERETT—Business forms manufacturer Pugent Press/Multiple Inc. is implementing THE System business management software from CRC Information Systems.
WISCONSIN
BROOKFIELD—High-end lenticular provider National Graphics recently moved into its new 62,000-square-foot facility on Lisbon Road. The expansion will allow the printer to bring various manufacturing processes in-house.
PEWAUKEE—The Printing Industries of Wisconsin has appointed Hal Hinderliter as the first director of the new Institute for Graphics and Imaging (IGI), which is housed in the Harry V. Quadracci Printing Education and Technology Center. Hinderliter is the former director of the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly State University.
