DC Area Printer Elects a Winner
UPPER MARLBORO, MD—In close proximity to the nation’s capital, family owned District Creative Printing provides services to groups that cater to the federal government, one of which is trade associations. Already operating a fleet of five MAN Roland presses, District Creative Printing recently installed a new five-color Roland 700 HiPrint press with in-line coater, making it the first shop in the Mid-Atlantic with the recently launched midsize model.
New Press Keeps Shop In Vogue
WAUKEGAN, IL—The difference is “like night and day,” says Pete DePerte, vice president and co-owner of Vogue Printers, comparing the difference between his old and new press. The older model press was replaced with a new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 with aqueous coater, which DePerte says runs more quickly and with a lot less waste, due to the intelligent presetting of the press via Prinect Prepress Interface. With print quality that has “vastly improved,” he reports that press OKs are now “a walk in the park.”
CALIFORNIA
AUBURN—A second Kodak Trendsetter News thermal platesetter has been purchased by Gold Country Printing, along with a Kodak Prinergy Evo workflow system and Kodak Staccato screening.
EL CAJON—The new workhorse for producing personalized, short-to- medium-run printed material at Ad Mail Direct is a Xerox iGen3 digital production press, which was recently installed to provide the exceptional service, quick turnaround, personalization and mailing capabilities that customers had been requesting come under one roof. The printer also owns a Xerox DocuColor 2060 digital color press.
EL SEGUNDO—Primary Color, a leading print provider for the advertising and entertainment industries, recently relocated its Culver City manufacturing plant here. Earlier this year, the printer’s Irvine, CA, prepress and digital printing facility moved to a new, expanded quarters in nearby Costa Mesa.
LOS ANGELES—Several pieces of Xerox equipment have been installed at Universal Reprographics: a Xerox Nuvera 288 EA, two Xerox Freeflow makeready stations and a Xerox DocuColor 242.
SANTA FE SPRINGS—Superprint Lithographics replaced its older model press with a new five-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000S sheetfed press with aqueous coater and extended delivery.
COLORADO
COLORADO SPRINGS—Paradigm Impressions, a family owned start-up, recently purchased a Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46-2 with IR dryer. The husband and wife team that opened the shop has more than 30 years of experience in the printing industry. Mark Eyberg was a press operator, and his wife Jodie is a former newspaper editor and page designer.
FLORIDA
PANAMA CITY—A new Goss Sunday 2000 four-unit web press has been purchased by Boyd Brothers, where it will be housed in the former sheetfed specialist’s new facility that is slated to open in early 2008. The press features a 2x6, 24-page format, PCF-1 pinless combination folder with double-parallel and delta fold capabilities, Goss Contiweb CS splicer, and Ecocool dryer with integrated chill rolls.
GEORGIA
ROME—The Rome News-Tribune and 10 weekly newspapers are being printed at News Publishing Co. with the help of a new Kodak Trendsetter News 70 CTP device.
ILLINOIS
BEDFORD PARK—Insert printer Atlantic Press has ordered its second Goss four-color C550 insert press, this one with Goss DigiRail digital inking and Goss Contiweb auxiliary components.
CHICAGO—The Argus Press, part of the Nationwide Graphics/Premier Print Organization, has added a new Xerox iGen3 digital press to enhance its one-to-one marketing and digital variable data printing capabilities.
ELK GROVE VILLAGE—A second six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000LS with tower coater and SimulChanger automatic plate-changing system was installed at Schiele Graphics, a 61-year-old commercial sheetfed and web printer.
IOWA
DES MOINES—After a trouble-free installation, Edwards Graphic Arts reports that its new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 with aqueous coating capabilities has, among other things, ramped up the printer’s press speeds to between 13,000 and 15,000 iph.
MARYLAND
BALTIMORE—A seventh Heidelberg has been added at Cavanaugh Press, a print provider for many Fortune 500 companies. The new six-color Speedmaster XL 105 is equipped with Instant Gate, Dry- Star Advanced, Center Color Assistant and Axis Control.
MASSACHUSETTS
WILMINGTON—A new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 press with coater has joined an eight-color XL 105 already running at Kirkwood Printing.
MINNESOTA
COON RAPIDS—John Roberts Co., which already operates four Heidelberg presses, recently added a new Speedmaster XL 105 press with full UV/hybrid capability to print, among other things, 500 copies of a new edition of the hand-lettered and illuminated St. John’s Bible, which will retail for $130 per volume.
NORTHFIELD—A second Kodak Trendsetter News thermal platesetter, a Kodak Prinergy Evo workflow system and Kodak Staccato Screening have been purchased by Cannon Valley Printing.
ST. CLOUD—Significant color capabilities have been added at Continental Press with the purchase of a new six-color, 28˝ Komori Lithrone (NL628C) offset press with coater. The press features automatic plate changing and ink key setting, as well as the PDC-S in-line SpectroDensitometer. The new Lithrone is Continental’s second Komori press.
MISSOURI
AURORA—MWM Dexter, a commercial printer specializing in short-run publications, recently invested in a new four-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000S with the SimulChanger plate-changing system.
NEBRASKA
FREMONT—Another Brandtjen & Kluge press has been added at Hammond & Stephens; this time it’s a rebuilt Kluge EHE Series foil stamping and embossing press.
NEW JERSEY
CLIFTON—NEI Worldwide Graphics purchased a new eight-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000TP Tandem Perfector with double coaters to produce brochures, promotional materials and product launch packages.
MAHWAH—After completing training in the G7 Proof-to-Print Process—and after producing proofs/printing to G7 standards—Ramsey Press has obtained G7 Master Printer Status from the IDEAlliance organization. G7 Master Qualification means the printer uses the most modern technology, techniques, and proofing and press controls to meet the G7 criterion required to produce a close visual match from proof to print. Ramsey Press was audited and its proofing machines were calibrated to its presses, as part of the G7 certification.
NEW YORK
NEW YORK—A multi-year agreement has been reached between Global Document Solutions (GDS) and Brinker Capital, a managed account and mutual fund services provider, for GDS to provide integrated business communications and document processing services.
ROCHESTER—Graphics services provider Lazer Inc. relocated to a new facility at 1150 University Ave., which is centrally located within the University Business Center and in the heart of Rochester’s “Neighborhood of the Arts.” A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house was held earlier this month.
PENNSYLVANIA
LANCASTER—Commercial web offset printer doodad has updated its plant here by investing in a QuadTech register guidance system with MultiCam, which will be integrated through a new QuadTech IconP2 platform.
PHILADEPHIA—The Philadelphia Inquirer purchased two NELA Evolution high speed Vision punch/benders to connect to Krause and Fuji CTP devices.
SOUTHAMPTON—Switching from polyester to metal plates, Digital Color Graphics recently installed a Heidelberg Suprasetter A52 thermal platesetter with a MetaDimension RIP.
YORK—York Graphic Services has changed its name to The YGS Group to reflect the expansion of printing and integrated publishing offerings that is now available. These include creative, advertising sales, printing and finishing, fulfillment and distribution, and reprint management.
SOUTH CAROLINA
COLUMBIA—Having steadily built and refined its Prinect workflow over the past several years, Crowson Stone Printing recently acquired a new Heidelberg Suprasetter E 105 SCL platesetter.
SOUTH DAKOTA
MADISON—To improve production of the Madison Daily Leader and 20 weeklies, Hunter Publishing purchased a new Kodak Trendsetter News 70 platesetter, Prinergy Evo workflow system and Kodak PREPS imposition software (Plus version).
TENNESSEE
NASHVILLE—An HP Indigo press 5000 and HP Indigo Production Manager digital front end have been added at the Cenveo Direct Mail Group’s plant here.
SHELBYVILLE—Four new Kluge EHD Series presses have been installed at the Jostens Inc. facility here. Jostens has more than 50 Kluge presses at its plants across the country.
TEXAS
AUSTIN—The Austin American Statesman connected its three Kodak Trendsetter News CTP devices with two new NELA VCP Vision punch/benders.
DALLAS—UV capabilities have been added to an eight-unit King web press at Dallas Offset to give customers a wider variety of paper grade options, ranging from 22-lb. directory to 100-lb. coated text. The printer expanded into UV as an alternative to heatset.
VIRGINIA
ALEXANDRIA—Fannon Printing has a new six-color, 29˝ Roland 500 press plus coating system that has produced more than three million impressions in the three months it’s been in operation.
WISCONSIN
FOND DU LAC—A new Presstek 34DI press has been purchased by Roto-Graphic Printing, along with a new 30˝ Tec Lighting UV roller coater system. Both machines were purchased through La Crosse Litho Supply.
SUN PRAIRIE—Twice is nice at DeGolier Printing, where a second digital press from Konica Minolta has been added. A Bizhub 1050E press with full finishing capabilities is now complementing an existing Bizhub C6500 digital color press.
