Stitch in Time Saves Nine
NORWELL, MA—Smith Print, a full-service commercial printer in the greater Boston area, recently installed a Vijuk 321-T saddlestitcher equipped with six pockets plus cover feeder. The new stitcher was sold and will be serviced locally by Pasquariello Graphics.
Frank Stanley, bindery foreman, and Tom Plourde, lead bindery operator, were involved in the final decision-making process and worked closely with Vijuk technicians during the installation and operational training.
Open House Showcases UV Special Effects Options
SAN RAFAEL, CA—A first-of-its-kind UV Special Effects open house, sponsored by KBA North America, was recently held at Paragraphics Inc., a commercial printer that specializes in UV printing and coating. Live demonstrations were provided on the printer’s six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press with UV coater. Numerous printers, both locally and from throughout the state, attended the open house.
Attendees also saw demonstrations of 10-micron stochastic printing on uncoated stock, which showed the wider color gamut and more intense color available from the UV process. Additionally, printers were treated to a “mini-trade show” by attending educational and product presentations given by the many UV-related vendors participating in the open house. They included Air Motion Systems, Bottcher America, Harris & Bruno, Kodak, Kohl & Madden and Mohawk Fine Papers.
PHOENIX—Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification has been earned by Prisma Graphic.
ORANGE—A new Goss Magnum 4 heatset web press and two new Goss C5 folders are being installed at the West Coast operation of Chicago-based Fisher Printing, a third-generation, family owned printer of national and regional newspaper advertising inserts.
BRADENTON—The Bradenton Herald purchased a new Glunz & Jensen AP-1000 plate punch, which is capable of punching and stacking up to 400 plates/hr.
POMPANO BEACH—The installation of a new five-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 perfector with coater has increased output and is posting triple-digit faster makereadies at Commercial Printers Inc.
STUART—Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification has been garnered by Southeastern Printing.
ATLANTA—A new Glunz & Jensen AP-1000 plate punch is now being used at the Journal and Constitution.
BELLWOOD—As part of Rider Dickerson’s ongoing “Green” initiatives, and to celebrate the company’s recent Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification, the printer donated 250 tree saplings to Chicago area designers at the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) annual meeting held recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
BROADVIEW—Lithographic Industries, a packaging printer that specializes in blister card printing in combination with gang runs, has installed a unique KBA Rapida 105 11-unit press, with straight 11-color or nine-over-two perfecting capabilities.
WHEELING—Segerdahl Corp., a direct mail printing operation, has invested in Technique’s full suite of integrated MIS modules and shop floor data collection solutions.
INDIANAPOLIS—Makeready efficiency has improved by 150 percent and press time has been cut in half (for two-sided four-color work) at Hobby Printing, since the installation of a new four-color, 29˝ Komori SPICA convertible perfector, equipped with CIP4 data compatibility.
LENEXA—To develop a niche for card printing (loyalty cards, key tags and other plastic card products), Getz Color Graphics purchased a new six-color, 29˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 2000LS sheetfed press with UV capabilities.
MADISONVILLE—Sprint Print now houses a new four-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 perfector with high-pile delivery and Prinect workflow, as well as a new Suprasetter A74 platesetter.
OWENSBORO—Greenwell-Chisholm Printing recently added a new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 press with coater.
AUGUSTA—The carbon footprint of J.S. McCarthy Printers is being reduced after the company transferred all of its electricity purchases to 100-percent wind-generated power. The printer has made many environmental changes, including installing energy-efficient fluorescent lighting and high-efficiency air compressors, which are helping the company reduce its annual electricity consumption by 6 percent.
LOWELL—The new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 perfector with aqueous coater, extended delivery and Instant Gate recently installed at King Printing has already significantly improved productivity for this educational and trade book printer.
NEW BEDFORD—Reynolds DeWalt, a cross-media marketing communications provider, has incorporated an end-to-end digital color workflow that includes an HP Indigo press 5000, HP Indigo ink mixing station (for creation of Pantone-licensed spot colors) and the HP Indigo Production Stream Server, powered by Creo.
NORTH ATTLEBORO—National engraver and printer The Artcraft Co. has obtained Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification.
GRAND RAPIDS—Foremost Graphics, a commercial printer that specializes in servicing local industries such as healthcare and colleges/universities, has installed a new six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone S Series (LS640) offset press with aqueous coater.
SALINE—Leading book manufacturer McNaughton & Gunn has expanded its binding line with several new additions of Kolbus equipment: a ZU 804 gathering machine, KM473 perfect binder with PUR glue capability, an HD 150B trimmer and a Rima stacker.
ST. LOUIS—Digital printer FormStore recently expanded its arsenal of Kodak equipment by installing a new NexPress 2500 digital production color press, as well as upgrading its existing NexPress 2100 Plus press.
CARLSTADT—Several new Quad-Tech products have been added to the pressroom at Pictorial Offset, including the Color Control System with Instrument Flight, Data CentralP2 and the Register Guidance System V, all of which have been integrated through the QuadTech ICONP2 platform.
TINTON FALLS—Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification has been awarded to Hatteras Press.
ALBUQUERQUE—Cottonwood Printing has invested in a Kodak Magnus 400 platesetter, Kodak Matchprint Ink-Jet 800 proofing system and the Kodak Prinergy EVO workflow.
ROCHESTER—A new Kodak NexPress 2100 digital production color press was installed by Qualtech Digital, a digital print provider and wide-format printer.
SYRACUSE—To accommodate its growing volume, Dupli Envelope & Graphics recently installed a pair of two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46 presses and a two-color Heidelberg Printmaster PM 52.
WHITE PLAINS—The Journal News has added CC1 CRC-610 automatic register control and register motorization packages to its eight-color Didde 860 press to boost productivity and reduce startup waste.
ELM CITY—Two new Drent Goebel Vision web offset presses have been purchased by IWCO Direct, a Chanhassen, MN-based provider of integrated direct mail services. Both presses have 10 print towers and in-line finishing capabilities. One machine is equipped with heatset curing; the other is equipped with UV curing.
AKRON—A new Shinohara 66 II P press and a retrofitted ABDick press (for envelope printing ) were installed at W.L. Beck Printing.
CLEVELAND—Great Lakes Integrated, a full-service marketing communications provider, has garnered the Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification.
COLUMBUS—A new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with touchscreen controls and 16-page signature capabilities has been installed at Century Graphics, along with a new Stahlfolder TH 82 folder and Polar 137 XT with full cutting system, including Transomat, jogger and piler turner.
PORTLAND—Mollet Printing, a 45-year-old, family owned business with FSC Chain-of-Custody certification, has installed a new six-color, 29˝ Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 (F format) with perfector and coater.
MALVERN—Great Atlantic Graphics has acquired a six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with coating unit, extended delivery and dryers.
MECHANICSBURG—Chain-of-Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council has been awarded to Fry Communications.
MOHNTON—Precision Graphics now feeds its four Heidelberg Speedmaster presses with the output from a fully automated Heidelberg Suprasetter E105 thermal platesetter with internal punching, multi-cassette loader and Prinect MetaShooter.
SEWICKELY—Agfa Graphics has donated an :Apogee 3.5 workflow management system and :Azura chemistry-free thermal plates to the PIA/GATF for use in many of the association’s popular and innovative programs.
SHARON—A new six-color Komori Lithrone S 29 offset press with in-line aqueous coater has been installed at Victor Printing.
WAYMART—A new Kodak Magnus 800 platesetter, with full automation and Creo production software, is now running at SG Printing, along with a new Solna D30 eight-unit coldset web, with four 50˝ Butler splicers and folder.
EAST PROVIDENCE—Two new Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74 presses have been installed at OmniColor Printing: a five-color with UV coater and a four-color perfector with in-line aqueous coating capabilities.
PIEDMONT—Book printer Genesis Press has moved to a new 60,000-square-foot facility here from its former location in Hialeah Gardens, FL, and has added a new four-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000R convertible perfector and a slightly used six-color, 40˝ Diamond 3000S straight press—both with aqueous tower coaters.
MEMPHIS—Opting for more press power and a boost in productivity, full service commercial printer IMEC (formerly Memphis Engraving) recently installed a new five-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 perfector with coater, as well as Prinect Axis Control and Color Assistant.
CARTHAGE—Complete Printing & Publishing, a 14-year-old, full service commercial operation, recently acquired a new six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000R convertible sheetfed perfector with coater.
FORT WORTH—The Imaging Bureau has added a new Goss G-25 double web press with in-line signature folding.
IRVING—Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification has been awarded to Ussery Printing.
ALEXANDRIA—Family owned Fannon Fine Printing invested in a new six-color, 29˝ MAN Roland 500 press with coating system.
FOREST—A new six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 with coating unit and extended delivery was installed at Seckman Printing.
RICHMOND—Total Printing purchased a new five-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Diamond 3000S sheetfed press with UV coating capabilities.
DELAVAN—A $200,000 expansion, which included the installation of a new Xerox DocuColor 5000 digital press, was recently completed by Central Printing.
SUSSEX—Mega catalog merchant Lillian Vernon signed a multi-year contract extension with Quad/Graphics for exclusive production of two catalog titles, “Lillian Vernon” and “Lilly’s Kids,” amounting to between 90 and 100 million books a year. Quad/Graphics has printed the catalogs since 1988.
MILWAUKEE—Visual Systems, a leading producer of overhead transparencies and textbook components, has purchased a new Kodak NexPress 2500 digital production color press.
