BindTech Enhances Perfect Binding Capabilities NASHVILLE, TN—BindTech, a full-service book manufacturer based here, recently acquired a Muller Martini Bolero perfect binder to help satisfy the varied and growing needs of its clientele.

“We needed more capacity to enhance our abilities to satisfy customer needs, but we also wanted additional diversification and a way to produce books faster and more economically,” explains Dale Nichols, president of BindTech. Nichols says that he needed a binder that could be tailored with an adhesive binding configuration that would be specifically advantageous to BindTech’s business strategies.

The 8,000 cph Bolero offers a wide range of adhesive binding technology, including hot melt or PUR in perfect bound, layflat or book blocks for casing-in, as well as sewn books. In addition, the binder offers a JDF/JMF-ready interface, and fully automated operation and motorized/digital makeready.

BindTech’s configuration includes a Muller Martini Frontero face trimmer, which produces gatefolded brochures and books in a single pass; a Quako quality control system, ASIR III camera technology (combines barcode recognition and image comparison); and end-sheet tipping technology.

New Purchase on Target at Bullseye

Even though his business is in the process of relocating, Scott Barker, Bullseye president, says he “couldn’t pass up the opportunity to install this unique system and reap the benefits of keeping my jobs in-house.”

Seeking Product of Excellence Entries

SEWICKLEY, PA—The Binding Industries Association (BIA) has announced its 2009 Product of Excellence Awards and call for entries. Binderies and printers are invited (and encouraged) to submit their best work to be judged against that of their peers in this world’s-only binding and looseleaf competition.

Winning the award assures industry recognition of the achievement, as well as capturing the attention of colleagues, customers and partners, who want to know which printer/bindery produced a product that is deemed to be “the best of the best.”

Muscle Bound Adds PUR Book Binding

MINNEAPOLIS—The most durable book-binding adhesive on the market is now available at Muscle Bound Bindery. PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive binding was added to better handle difficult stocks, cross-grain stocks and stocks with heavy ink coverage.

“We want to be as flexible as we can and give our customers the best adhesive to fit each of their individual products,” says Mike Welsch, president, noting that PUR-bound products also provide excellent page pulls that are well-suited for repeated use. “For heavy-use books that are built to last, we want to offer PUR adhesive binding as another alternative.”

Additionally, Muscle Bound will now be able to produce hardcover PUR books with the new adhesive.

Keeping It All in the (Heidelberg) Family

RANCHO DOMINGUEZ, CA—Starting out as a print broker in 1998, Nextdayflyers.com is now a Web-to-print printer specializing in short-run, full-color work with a focus on high quality and quick turnarounds.

The 70-employee company operates in a 36,000-square-foot facility that is packed with Heidelberg equipment, including a six-color, Speedmaster SM 74 press with in-line UV coating, a Topsetter P 74 platesetter, an old Heidelberg Windmill and two Polar cutters. The all-Heidelberg shop recently added another “sibling” system: a new Stahlfolder TH 82 folder.

A long-time relationship and reliability were key factors in the decision to buy the Stahlfolder, explains Dave Handmaker, company president. The Heidelberg rep also helped Handmaker think through the shop’s workflow and planning, “so we felt comfortable that we were getting a machine that would perform for us day in and day out, and that the service would be there, if and when we needed it,” he says.

Burr Ridge, IL-based commercial printer VISOgraphic installed a new Stitchmaster ST 350 saddlestitcher and a Stahlfolder TH 82 folder, both from Heidelberg.
