Shop Cuts Check During Graph Expo

P.S. Finishing Gets Perfect Complement
NEW BERLIN, WI—P.S. Finishing recently installed a Standard Horizon BQ-470 book binder. The fully automated, four-clamp BQ-470 perfect binder is flexible enough to easily accommodate short runs, while still capable of efficiently handling larger jobs.
“Acquisition of the Horizon BQ-470 perfect binder complements our existing equipment, as we continue our commitment to the book rebinding and short-run edition binding markets,” notes Paul Slotty, owner of P.S. Finishing.
P.S. Finishing’s Horizon BQ-470 is fed by a Nord-son DuraPail bulk adhesive melter, which processes PUR adhesives for high-quality finished books. The use of PUR adhesives provides high durability and improved page pull strength.
The Horizon BQ-470 perfect binder is fully automated to simplify changeovers. A color LCD touchscreen provides easy setup and operation.
Alaska Printer Warms Up New Equipment
JUNEAU, AK—When Alaska Litho moved to more spacious quarters last year, the 37-year-old commercial printer decided to spruce up its equipment arsenal, as well. That meant enhancements to the press and bindery.
The printer replaced an aging Heidelberg GTO with a new four-color Printmaster PM 74 press, and picked up a Polar cutting system and Stahlfolder B 26 folder for its postpress lineup.
With 16 employees and yearly sales of $2.5 million, Alaska Litho provides a regional customer base comprised of government agencies, small corporations, the seafood industry and tourism-related businesses with brochures, rack cards, calendars, posters, cookbooks, promotional materials and annual reports.
New Machinery Bolsters Nahan Makeready Speeds
ST. CLOUD, MN—Nahan Printing has enjoyed a shot in its bindery arm with the addition of a new Muller Martini Tempo 22 saddlestitcher. The 610-employee shop has reportedly seen makeready time reduced over other stitchers by 22 percent, with net output increasing 34 percent.
Nahan Printing provides commercial work and direct mail business for Fortune 500 companies. Its specialties including high-fashion retail catalog printing and distribution and full-service direct mail production for all segments of the direct marketing industry. It also prints and processes more than one million pieces of mail per day.
Metzgers Opts For Sophisticated Saddlestitcher
TOLEDO, OH—Metzgers Printing + Mailing recently installed a Muller Martini BravoPlus T saddlestitcher configured with six pockets plus cover feeder, as well as a 4th and 5th knife, in-line three-hole and single punch, and Apollo compensating stacker.
Since installing the BravoPlus T stitcher, Metzgers Printing + Mailing has achieved significant improvements in productivity along with the potential to grow its business even further. Among those improvements are significantly faster setup capabilities than Metzgers has ever had, as well as faster runs overall.
“The speed of the machine, the speed of changeovers...it all equals greater throughput,” notes Joe Metzger, company president. “The faster we can deliver to our customers, the better. Also, we were outsourcing more and more stitching work, and we needed to make sure we could keep everything in-house. It’s been the foundation of our growth…keep it in-house, and keep control of the project and the deadline. That means happy customers, and happy customers equals more growth.”
Metzgers Printing + Mailing is a 65-employee business that has grown from a typesetting shop in 1970 to a full-size commercial printer and mailer. Metzgers produces direct mail catalogs, brochures, annual reports and several other kinds of products for customers throughout the Midwest and Canada.

Muller Martini has opened a new 10,000-square-foot rebuild center in Allentown, PA. The plant includes state-of-the-art capabilities for both rebuilding and refurbishing used finishing equipment.
The Hartley Press, Jacksonville, FL, replaced a 12-year-old paper cutter with a new high-speed, programmable Polar 115X cutter from Heidelberg.
Whitson Bindery Services, Chicago, has purchased a Muller Martini AmigoPlus perfect binder.
Two new H+H tipping machines have been acquired by Pictorial Offset in Carlstadt, NJ.
Express Bindery of Buena Park, CA, has obtained a Rollem TR die scoring system and an air feeder.
Image Graphics and Litho of Portland, OR, recently acquired a KAMA TS 74 automated diecutter with foil stamping from Heidelberg.
A PB-15 drilling system with automatic infeed from Rollem International was installed at Ross Bindery of Santa Fe Springs, CA.
