Folder-Gluer Proves to Be Twice as Nice
DALLAS/FT. WORTH—Trade finisher Registermarks Letter Press Services recented added its second Bobst Fuego 110 A-2 CS folder-gluer in the past 18 months. The company runs order sizes from a few thousand to more than two million, which means some jobs can tie up a folder for two days.
“Adding the second Fuego has allowed us to complete many of these large orders in a single shift,” explains Mark Requena, president.
The new Fuego has been fitted with a multi-feeder inserter device for tipping in CDs, cards and booklets during the folding operation. “With this configuration, we can often do in one operation what would have previously taken at least two,” says Requena, noting that one of the first jobs through the multi-feeder was a booklet tipped in to 224,000 CD carriers for the Texas Tollway.
E&M Bindery & Finishing Claims An ‘Industry First’ Installation
CLIFTON, NJ—E&M Bindery & Finishing, a complete bookbinding and print finishing services company, announced that it recently became the first U.S. company to install a Rilecart DP-4500 in-line, automatic punching and Wire-O book-binding system, which it purchased form American Binding Products of Miami. With 46 years of mechanical binding experience and seven other Wire-O machines on E&M’s floor, Russell Starling, general manager, says this new addition has most certainly raised the bar a notch or two.
As one of the fastest fully automatic punching and binding machines on the market, the Rilecart DP-4500 quickly transforms loose sheets of paper and covers into finished books. It divides collated book blocks as necessary, punches each stack, re-collates the stacks along with the covers, and automatically transfers them to the binding station, where the Wire-O elements fed from a spool are inserted and closed in perfect shape. The machine is capable of punching and binding up to 3,500 books an hour.
If the book block is no thicker than 5mm, the DP-4500 can punch and bind at top speed. An advantage of this machine is that book blocks requiring splits can have portions pre-punched, allowing it to maintain near-top running speeds.
“This enables E&M to get the job back to our customer faster than before because we can typically reduce our workflow by one to two steps,” explains Gary Markovits, E&M president. “We now go straight from our diecutting or other finishing departments to collation, knowing we only have one more process because the DP-4500 can complete the job in one pass.”
A unique benefit is that the machine can automatically punch and bind text with tabs and oversized covers at the head, foot, face or all three.
Grocery Chain Is Cut Above with New Equipment
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC—The Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., which operates 108 grocery stores in the Carolinas and Georgia, is the parent company of Tri-State Printing, which produces a wide range of printed materials for the grocery chain, especially advertising circulars.
However, in addition to its role as “printing arm” for Piggly Wiggly, Tri-State also serves other regional clients that include direct mail catalog suppliers, retail stores, commercial businesses, high schools and colleges. Printed products—which include a wide range of commercial materials such as catalogs, newsletters, newspapers, brochures—are produced on web and sheetfed presses, while products are cut using a recently installed high-speed Polar 92X programable cutting system from Heidelberg.
Randall Shull, general manager, ascribes the higher productivity of the new Polar across a single eight-hour shift to the accompanying air tables and user-friendly electronics.

Documation LLC, Eau Claire, WI, has added a Horauf off-line three-knife trimmer purchased from Colter & Peterson. The handfed model features computerized controls and on-demand capabilities, and is capable of multi-book trimming.
Apex Commercial Printing, Atlanta, has installed a new Heidelberg Polar 115 X cutter.
A Baumann Size-8 (large format) pile turner, equipped with a jogging feature to square and align sheets during the aeration process, has been installed at Toronto-based TI Group. Baumann pile turners are distributed by Colter & Peterson.
Advanced Image Direct, of Fullerton, CA, has purchased a 30˝ double-head Rollaway machine from Rollem International.
A Rollem 18˝ Auto 4 CPS and a 30˝ Champion ETR scoring, slitting and perforating system were installed at TK Printing in Brooklyn, NY.
Semi-finished and finished products made of paper, cardstock, paperboard and plastic foils are now being cut with a new Polar 92 X guillotine cutter at Williams Printing, Rural Hall, NC.
According to company officials, productivity is up and life is easier for the bindery team at Paulsen Printing in Memphis, TN, since adding a new Heidelberg Stahlfolder B25 folder.
Richmond, VA-based Heritage Printing Service has acquired a new Heidelberg KAMA TS 74-60 automatic diecutter with increased sheet dimension.
Productivity has tripled since an older model cutter was replaced with a new Polar 137 XT at Corporate Electronic Stationery in Troy, MI.
