American-Made Stacker/Bundler Gaining Popularity in North America
YORK, PA—IMC America (sales agent for Penn Graphics) has announced three new installations in North America for the PGE300 semi-automatic stacker/bundler: Hi-Liter Graphics, in Burlington, WI; McCormick-Armstrong, Wichita, KS; and Cenveo MM&T in Toronto.
The machine is an American-made stacker/bundler designed for production on today’s high-speed web presses.
Back-to-Back Bobst Installations
NILES, IL—Just three months after installing its first Bobst SPanthera 106-LER Autoplaten diecutter (with in-line blanking), Graphic Technologies added another. Reportedly the second largest trade finisher in the country, Graphic Technologies offers a full complement of capabilities, including folding, folding-gluing, laminating, kitting, in-house tool production and a full structural design lab.
“Technologies and consumer trends are continually changing, so you’re never quite sure what the customer may want next,” says Tim Uchwat, CFO. “With the SPanthera, we can convert everything from light papers up to 30-pt. board and micro-flute corrugated. Open House Highlights Full-Flap Book Production
BAD MERGENTHEIM, GERMANY—Muller Martini hosted an open house featuring live demonstrations of full-flap book production on its new Diamant 35 short-run bookline configured with a Vesta jacketing machine. The new Diamant 35 produces up to 2,100 books per hour, a 16 percent improvement compared to the company’s Diamant 30 predecessor model.
The many visitors at the open house expected to see hardcover production, but instead witnessed the Diamant 35 manufacture books with gatefolded flaps and flexible covers, which are commonly referred to as full-flap books. This type of book is reportedly gaining popularity, as more readers appreciate the attributes of a flexible cover, including easy opening, good layflat characteristics, and the ability of the flaps to provide both information and serve as bookmarks.
Event guests watched with interest as the books with flexible case and open flaps entered the Vesta. The machine opened the book covers, folded in the flaps and reclosed the books, completing these tasks at full production speed.
Muller Martini reports that the short-run Diamant 35 bookline is quickly becoming the equipment of choice for many bookbinders in North America due to its highly efficient operation, book quality and versatile production possibilities.
Starting Fresh With Relocation
RICHMOND, VA—When David McGinnis, founder of Digital Ink, decided to move his business into an expanded building more than five times larger than its current location, he knew that big changes lay ahead for his company. Instead of going through the hassle of moving equipment across town and setting up in a new location, McGinnis decided to sell everything and start fresh with a suite of new equipment—prepress, postpress and everything in between—all from Heidelberg.
The bindery now features a Polar 115 X cutter, Stahlfolder B 30 folder and Stitchmaster ST 90 saddlestitcher. In prepress are a Prinect Printready prepress system and Suprasetter A74 and Suprasetter MCL 74 platesetters. The presroom is equipped with a six-color Speedmaster CD 74 with aqueous coater and the Prinect CP2000 Center.
“We had Heidelberg equipment already, but this upgrade allows us to start fresh with added capacity for our clients’ work,” says McGinnis.
Quick Cuts
Conceptual Product Development (CPD) of West Caldwell, NJ, has added hardcover binding to its production capabilities with the purchase of a new short-run Powis Parker Fastback hardcover binding system. A Foilfast printer produces deluxe foil-embossed artwork on the cover and spine of the book in an assortment of matching colors to complement the title sheet.
New Bedford, MA-based Name Plates for Industries installed a new Champion semi-slitting unit from Rollem International for its label manufacturing operation.
A new Wohlenberg City 6000 perfect binder equipped with an integrated VSS face trimming device, from Colter & Peterson, has been purchased by Los Angeles-based Bridge Publications, which is the Church of Scientology’s North American publishing company.
