Turning Gold, Going Green
HIAWATHA, IA—As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the Fisher Group decided it was time to earn FSC chain-of-custody certification, as a “green gift” to itself. In addition to its recent FSC certification, the advertising, direct response and mailing services provider has implemented many sustainability initiatives, including recycling nearly 80 tons of paper last year; using leftover ink to fuel a cement kiln; and using digital printing plates, which do not require hazardous chemicals.
Pennsauken, NJ-based CRW Graphics recently received the GreenWorks Environmental Recognition Award from Agfa Graphics for its use of chemistry-free printing plates, as well as other green initiatives implemented by the printer. These include installing faster makeready presses; recycling trimmed paper, aluminum printing plates, waste sheets and ink; repurposing exhaust from a new digital press to generate heat for the plant in winter; using linseed oil-based ink on its lithographic presses; and becoming FSC certified.
