Uniting to Fight Global Climate Change
NEW YORK—Representatives from Time Inc., Pictorial Offset and Eastman Kodak joined forces to speak “green” during a recent seminar sponsored by the Advertising Production Club (APC) of New York and Partnership in Print Production (P3) at The Yale Club here. The keynote sustainability panel addressed the topic of how to “Fight Global Climate Change by Cutting Through the Green Fog,” which focused on sustainabiity issues in printing and advertising.
Speakers included David Refkin, Time Inc.’s director of sustainable development; Nick Patrissi, Eastman Kodak’s manager of market development; Don Carli, panel moderator and research fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Development; Dan Marselle, first vice president of the APC and senior vice president/managing director of Euro RSCG Life Blue Star; and Gary Pawlaczk, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Pictorial Offset.
The Rainforest Alliance has endorsed the publication of the first Bible to be printed on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The Charles F. Stanley “Life Principles Daily Bible” is printed on paper that is FSC-certified (through the Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program). The project was a collaboration between Domtar Paper, which devleoped the specialized lightweight Bible paper, Bible publisher Thomas Nelson, printer RR Donnelley and the environmental nonprofit group Green Press Initiative.
The sixth installment of the Web Offset Champion Group’s best practices guide, “Environmental Considerations,” is now available. It details the underlying issues of the “4Es” (Energy, Economy, Efficiency and Ecology) and how to improve business performance using the “4Rs” (Redesign, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). Amos Communications, Beloit, OH, was recently invited to attend a formal dinner at the United Nations headquarters in New York, which was focused on the growing global water crisis. UN officials selected Amos Communications, which is dedicated to 100 percent waterless printing, to produce the printed materials for the event. When the 1,000 invitations were printed for the UN, one was returned to Amos, inviting the printer to attend.
Fineline Printing Group, Indianapolis, is conducting an internal audit of its practices to evaluate key areas where eco-friendly practices are currently implemented and analyze places where improvements can be made. Following the investigation, a “Growing Green Guide” will be produced with milestones for improving the company’s sustainability efforts, as well as its social responsibility to the environment.
Book publishing giant Simon & Schuster an-nounced a new paper policy that will require at least 10 percent of the paper the company buys to originate from FSC-certified forests by 2012. The policy also commits to increasing the percentage of recycled fiber in the paper printed and bound in the United States from 10 percent to 25 percent by 2012.
Cultivate Communications in Canoga Park, CA, reports that it recently became the first printer in the Western United States to be tri-certified: FSC, SFI and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
Colonial Printing, Warwick, RI, recently received FSC chain-of-custody certification.
Brown Industries, in Dalton, GA, has been awarded FSC chain-of-custody certification for its printing facilities, Brown Printing and Gregory Graphics.
GFX International, a design and production firm in Grayslake, IL, launched its new corporate Green Policy, expanding on its recycling program, implementing improved waste and energy management initiatives, and using paper made with 100 percent post-consumer fiber for all of its in-house administrative needs, as well as its marketing collateral.
Christmas City Printing, Bethlehem, PA, has received its FSC chain-of-custody certification.
Courier Graphics, of Phoenix, has obtained FSC certification.
Watt Printers, Cleveland, is now FSC chain-of-custody certified.

Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group offers “Begin Your Passage to Sustainability,” a kit featuring information and resources to assist printers in understanding how sustainability may impact their businesses. The kit provides printers with an overview of trends and best practices, as well as the business and operational implications of developing a sustainability program. It also features a white paper on sustainability, various sustainability articles, a case study of an eco-friendly printer, a glossary of terms, and a guide to industry and government resources. Stora Enso North America recently received the National Wildlife Federation’s National Conservation Achievement Award for exemplary leadership in protecting the environment and natural resources. National Wildlife Federation magazines are printed on Stora Enso papers that are FSC certified, made with 30 percent PCW and do not contain chlorine-bleached pulp.
Xerox Corp. has earned chain-of-custody certification from both the FSC and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Xerox, with nearly 80 FSC and PEFC accredited distribution centers worldwide, achieved certification based on the FSC’s new international multi-site standards. PI
