CGX Acquires Universal
HOUSTON—Consolidated Graphics is in the process of adding another firm to its stable of companies with the recent letter of intent it signed to obtain St. Louis-based Universal Printing, a $45 million concern that ranked 109 on the 2012 Printing Impressions 400 list. Founded in 1939, the firm employs 150 workers and provides both web and sheetfed printing.
Dellas Staff Is Reduced
SYRACUSE, NY—Dellas Graphics, which was acquired by Canfield & Tack last November, has seen 20 of its 31 jobs eliminated through layoffs and attrition, according to The Post-Standard. Most operations have been shifted to Canfield & Tack's Rochester, NY, facility. The 11 workers will be kept on in Syracuse as part of a reduced operation, Canfield & Tack Chairman Ray Brown told the newspaper.
RR Donnelley Renews Pact
CHICAGO—RR Donnelley has been awarded a multiyear, multimillion dollar agreement by Williams-Sonoma Inc. that renews and significantly expands the companies' relationship. Under the terms of the agreement, RR Donnelley will provide printing, sophisticated co-mailing and mailing logistics services for all of Williams-Sonoma's catalogs.
Fire Destroys Print Shop
SHELDON, IA—An overnight fire June 4 at the White Wolf Web printing company here virtually wiped out the facility, according to the N'West Iowa Review. There were no injuries reported. Firefighters responded to the plant—which prints newspapers and other publications—around 1:20 a.m. It took firefighters from four departments nearly 12 hours to fully douse the blaze, as the responders had to continuously battle flareups. At press time, the state fire marshal had yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Courier, Ingram Forge Deal
NASHVILLE, TN—Ingram Content Group and Courier Corp. announced that they will be working together to offer an array of global content services for publisher clients. North Chelmsford, MA-based Courier will use Ingram's print-on-demand and digital distribution services, and Ingram will use Courier's printing capabilities to streamline workflow and speed delivery to retailers and readers worldwide.
Printing Swindler Sentenced
EAST GREENBUSH, NY—Henry Diehm, 65, a former accountant for Curtis Printing, pleaded guilty to ripping off the printer to the tune of more than $100,000. He admitted to taking checks pre-signed by Curtis' owner, Richard Lieberman, and using the money to pay his own expenses, the Times Union reported. Diehm handled the books at Curtis Printing for 15 years prior to his April 2012 arrest. He was ordered to pay full restitution by Aug. 19 or face six months in jail, in addition to five months of probation.
Paper Company Is Fined
AUSTIN, TX—The 2011 release of black liquor into the Pearl River in Louisiana has cost Temple-Inland $3.3 million in fines, The Advocate reported. The paper firm, a business of International Paper, was also sentenced to two years probation. The black liquor, a byproduct of pulp production, flowed from the Bogalusa mill into the Pearl River in 2011 after an evaporator at the mill became clogged.
