Wafa is far luckier than most Afghan women, though. She recently had the opportunity to visit some U.S. printers through a program sponsored by Bpeace, an international, non-profit organization that helps women entrepreneurs in post-conflict countries like Afghanistan and Rwanda to build sustainable businesses. One volunteer host was Sharon Newman, president of Action Envelope in Lindenhurst, NY. Like Wafa, Newman faced adversity when her husband Ken died suddenly in 1993, leaving her with three young children and no experience in running a business.
