Sappi Releases Third Issue of Its Journal on Sustainability
BOSTON—March 29, 2011—As part of Sappi Fine Paper North America’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, it has published a third issue of its journal on sustainability, eQ Journal 003. The eQ Journal presents Sappi’s initiatives in sustainability and highlights best practices in the printing, graphic design and publishing fields, plus more.
The latest issue of the eQ Journal, now available online and in print, includes a first-hand look at how Sappi’s Somerset pulp mill in Skowhegan, ME, has reduced its carbon footprint through a major capital project; and how a strategic partnership between Sappi’s Cloquet Mill and the University of Minnesota Extension Service, Carlton County By-Products Program, has helped local dairy farmers make their soil more viable through the reuse of lime mud and boiler ash, byproducts from pulp and paper manufacturing that are typically landfilled. Annually, Sappi distributes 25,000 to 30,000 tons of these byproducts to local farmers in the Cloquet area, saving them over $1 million per year in soil amendments while significantly reducing the papermaker’s landfill volumes.
In addition, eQ Journal 003 shares examples of how savvy industry leaders have strengthened their bottom line by embedding sustainability into the foundations of their businesses.
“Sustainability is a key element of our overall business strategy,” said Laura Thompson, director, Sustainable Development & Technical Marketing, Sappi Fine Paper North America. “The environmental and business benefits are many and have resulted in eliminating waste, creating energy efficiencies, establishing significant reductions in operating costs, strengthening our company's brand value, and opening up new markets for products.”
The eQ Journal and eQ Tool are elements of Sappi’s industry-leading sustainability brand “eQ,” which can be explored on the new eQ microsite. The site also includes videos about Sappi's other sustainability activities including its collaboration with Living Lands & Waters, to make our nation's rivers cleaner places.
