SCI Installs HP T300 Inkjet Web for Book Printing on Coated Media
PALO ALTO, CA—May 11, 2011—Strategic Content Imaging (SCI) has installed an HP T300 Color Inkjet Web press as the centerpiece of its on-demand printing operation to service the increasing demand for four-color, short-run printing on coated media. SCI, a Command Web Group company that is one of the most advanced users of digital color printing solutions in the Metropolitan New York area, installed the press last month in SCI’s new facility in Secaucus, NJ.
The company chose the HP T300 because of its market-proven ability to reliably deliver quality printing on coated media—an important factor in the educational publishing space. Approximately half of the HP T300’s workload is devoted to book printing contracts for major publishers seeking a digital color solution that can significantly reduce the waste and expense associated with warehousing and fulfillment operations.
The 30"-wide press prints using a native resolution of 1,200 nozzles per inch and provides full-color variable-data printing at speeds up to 2,600 letter-size pages per minute.
A ‘virtual warehouse’ for clients
“This press is like a virtual warehouse for our clients because it allows them to access and retrieve printed products, in four-color or black and white, on-demand, in pre-sorted mail sequence, in the exact quantities they require,” said Burt Scherman, president, SCI. “Our clients are completely changing the way they look at printing and communicating with their customers, and this is exactly the solution they need not only for books, but also for magazine ads, transpromotional printing, personalized direct mail and other applications including QR Codes and other Internet applications. HP has the complete solution to address these significant opportunities.”
SCI executives spent months discussing options with inkjet digital press vendors last year after recognizing an untapped demand for higher-volume, lithography-quality digital printing among current and prospective clients.
The company’s most promising prospects were for coated media jobs, which SCI can deliver using Utopia Inkjet matte- and dull-finish papers for the HP T300 from Appleton Coated. The company also is testing a variety of coated media from other suppliers.
A transformative solution for the publishing market and beyond
HP’s business model for Inkjet Web Presses does away with the click charges that are common in the digital printing space, reducing the cost per page for digital printing. This, in turn, means SCI can offer highly competitive pricing to its clients while printing full-color digital jobs in significantly higher volumes.
“SCI has championed digital color printing in a marketplace that includes leading publishers, as well as the finance and insurance firms that purchase much of the industry’s transactional statement printing,” said Aurelio Maruggi, vice president and general manager, Inkjet High-speed Production Solutions, HP. “The HP T300 is transforming the role digital print plays in the communications landscape, which means SCI can now offer its clients more value.”
