PLAINFIELD, IL—April 25, 2013—Working with Argonne National Laboratory, Signs By Tomorrow of Plainfield produced and installed a 65-foot-long, full-color graphics wrap for Mira, one of the largest and fastest supercomputers in the world.
Mira has 20 times the processing power and is five times more energy efficient than its predecessor Intrepid, and was constructed by IBM for the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) with the support of the United States Department of Energy. Mira is being used to address the most challenging problems in science and engineering today, exploring wide-ranging issues related to energy and the environment. In November 2012, Mira was named the fourth-fastest supercomputer in the world by TOP500.org, a semi-annual list compiled by leading computing industry experts.
According to Signs By Tomorrow of Plainfield owner James Murray, the scope of work was huge—literally—as the final wrap was more than 65 feet long and six-feet high. The design, which features images representing the various types of research with which Mira can assist, was provided by the client, but Murray says Signs By Tomorrow assisted with technical elements including color correction, sizing, media selection and adhesion issues. The final wrap was printed on eco-friendly 3M Controltac 180-10 V3 with 3M 8518 laminate.
"Although supercomputers have been wrapped before, this is one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world," Murray noted. "Signs By Tomorrow has completed highly specialized projects before but this job reflects the pinnacle of technology for our industry, as well as our client's. We are very proud of our role in this very important project."
