INTERNATIONAL FALLS, MN—Boise Inc. scheduled nearly 300 layoffs this week at its paper mill here, a result of declining product consumption and the need to reduce costs brought about by the closing of three paper machines.
The machines were smaller units that produced specialty products. Since Boise had to source its pulp elsewhere, that made their operation more costly and not sustainable in the long term, according to Northland's NewsCenter.
Plant capacity will be reduced by 115 tons per year. The company is assisting employees via outplacement services. Sales and marketing worked with customers to help them find alternative suppliers.
Boise was recently acquired by Packaging Corp. of America (PCA).
