Standard Finishing Systems Announces On Demand Highlights
ANDOVER, MA—March 16, 2009—Under the theme “Think Intelligent Automation,” Standard will showcase a broad range of highly automated post press, paper handling and inserting solutions at On Demand. “Intelligent Automation” springs from Horizon’s longstanding development philosophy, which combines broad technical finishing expertise with deep study and understanding of the fundamental steps required to produce professional-quality cut sheets, folded signatures, saddlestitched booklets, and perfect bound books with speed and efficiency.
Standard will show the recently introduced Standard Horizon BQ-270C single-clamp perfect binder. Designed for the short run POD and commercial print book markets, the BQ-270C single-clamp binder features a 10.4” intelligent color touchscreen control console and an ergonomically-situated digital caliper that measures book thickness and automatically transfers the settings to the binder for quick, automated changeover. The BQ-270C is designed for single-person production of up to 500 books per hour. The automated set-up process allows truly efficient single-edition POD book production.
“Our business isn’t just about equipment, it’s about helping printers save time and money in their post-press operations,” says David Reny, Executive Vice President, Standard Finishing Systems, Horizon’s exclusive North American distributor. “Best-in-class Horizon automation – such as on the new BQ-270C binder – lets us deliver productivity and labor-saving efficiency to digital print and conventional offset operations of every size.”
The Standard Horizon BQ-470 four-clamp binder, featuring interchangeable EVA / PUR adhesive tanks and unparalleled automation, now has two important new accessories. Operators can use the SI-470 digital caliper to measure book thickness and automatically transfer this data to the binder for automated set-up. The other accessory is the new PM-470 pre-melt tank, for operator convenience and longer runs between adhesive replenishment.
The recently released Standard Horizon AF-406T is a small-format automated 6-buckle folder with pile feed and suction head with an optional 6-buckle second unit that can be added straight or cross-wise, for sheets up to 15.7” x 25.6”. This provides application flexibility, especially for the insert, outsert, and pharmaceutical markets. The Standard Horizon AFC-566FG is a fully automated six-buckle folder which accepts sheets up to 21.9” x 33.4”. The AFC-566FG includes a pile feeder with suction head, has 17 pre-set fold patterns, and can store up to 200 custom jobs in memory for easy recall, with automated make-ready in 14 seconds.
Horizon also brings intelligent control with full JDF compliance via the i2i Bindery Control System. Job parameters can be entered at a central control console and then called-up by any Horizon finisher on the network. Machines in the Standard booth at On Demand will be i2i-connected, enabling fully-automated set-up, job tracking, productivity and work-in-progress statistics, error reports, and more. The Horizon i2i system can also be interfaced with MIS systems for seamless JDF/JMF interoperability. Standard will also demonstrate Ultimate Bindery, an affordable turnkey solution from Ultimate Technographics that imposes the job, then generates and transfers the JDF finishing data to the Horizon i2i system for fully automated set-up at the finisher.
The Standard Hunkeler CS6-II rotary cutter with chip-out will be shown as part of a solution producing full-bleed trimmed color self mailers. The UW6 unwinder and high performance CS6-II cutter will be double-cutting sheets from a pre-printed roll. The sheets will then be folded into direct mailers on the in-line Standard Horizon AFC-566H automated signature folder.
The Standard Hunkeler Gen6 UW6 unwinder and RW6 rewinder will also be demonstrated with the Screen TruePress Jet520 full color variable printing system. The Truepress Jet520 prints up to 420 feet of paper per minute at high image resolution. Featuring in-the-field speed upgrades to 720 fpm, this roll-to-roll solution delivers constant web tension for uniformly tight, straight rolls and handles a wide range of paper stocks with ease. Consistent roll quality is essential to efficient downstream paper processing, assuring trouble-free inserting and smooth off-line finishing. This solution will be shown in Screen Booth # 1925.
Xerox will also feature the new Standard Horizon ColorWorks PRO in-line document finisher with the Xerox DocuColor 8000 digital color press, providing one-pass full-bleed trimming, scoring, stitching, folding, face-trimming and stacking in a compact, user-friendly design. The new new entry-level ColorWorks and full-featured ColorWorks PRO now connect to all Xerox DocuColor 5000, 7000 and 8000 models. FujiFilm will also show the Standard Horizon ColorWorks PRO with the Xerox DocuColor 8000 on their Booth # 2018.
The Standard KAS 465HS inserter will also be shown, handling envelopes from #10 up to 10"x13", with a maximum thickness of ½", inserting at speeds up to 6,000 envelopes per hour. Insert stations can handle a wide variety of material including single sheets, cards, reply envelopes, and booklets. All feeders are top load / bottom feed, so that they can be continuously loaded without stopping production.
On Demand attendees are invited to arrange a private equipment demonstration tailored to their application requirements by pre-registering for the Standard VIP Program at http://www.sdmc.com/ondemand09.
