Shorter runs lengths and automation—you’ll be hearing and reading those terms a lot this week. Indeed, the importance of the latter is being driven by the former. A greater number of shorter-run jobs means that those jobs need to be processed as quickly and as error-free as possible. A lot of the automation action is on the software/prepress side of the workflow—but automation is quickly coming to binding and finishing.
“As we’ve watched trends toward shorter runs and increased automation in recent years, post-press has been the last frontier in the relentless drive for super-efficient operations that drive labor out of the cost equation,” says Will Frank, Marketing Specialist, Standard Finishing Systems (Booth 1231). “Automation is the key here, with faster setup and changeover, as well as reduced waste, especially important for short runs.” At the same time, skilled bindery personnel are becoming fewer and farther between, which creates enhanced demand for systems that are easy to learn and use.
Standard Finishing’s booth includes live demonstrations of die-cutting, perfect binding and trimming, slitting and creasing, folding, saddlestitching, inspection systems, and rollfed print solutions. Standard will produce a range of finished products highlighting the short-run capabilities of individual systems, as well as complete end-to-end workflows which demonstrate the flexible functionalities of the equipment.
Standard is also using PRINT 17 to debut a number of new products. The Horizon BQ-480 Perfect Binder is the latest in Horizon’s line of perfect binders. Making its North American debut is Hunkeler’s POPP8 machine generation: a Roll-to-Cut/Stack solution, and a Roll-to-Fold configuration with Dynamic Perforation, Web Merging, and Web Inspection.
Also making their North American debut are the Standard Horizon AFV-56/TV-56 Folder, which includes automatic scoring navigation and double-sheet detection, improved registration, and easier sheet loading; the Standard Horizon StitchLiner Mark III SaddleStitcher, featuring expanded booklet size and increased productivity; and the Standard Horizon FoldLiner 7 SaddleStitching System, which accommodates press sheets up to 40".
Visitors can also attend a series of presentations, which highlight the POPP8 Roll-to-Stack and Roll-to-Fold lines, the Smart Binding System (including the new BQ-480), the StitchLiner Mark III SaddleStitcher, and the FoldLiner 7 SaddleStitching system.
