WESTAMPTON, NJ—Muller Martini and MBO America recently held a joint bindery customer expo at MBO's headquarters. The event attracted more than 250 participants.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has issued the first international safety standard for printing press systems: ISO 12648:2003 Graphic technology—Safety requirements for printing press systems. The standard was developed by ISO Technical Committee 130 (TC 130) Working Group 5 (Safety and Ergonomics). The committee is administered by NPES The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies with NPES Vice President William K. "Kip" Smythe and Director of Standards Programs Mary Abbott serving as convener and secretary, respectively.
Dauphin Graphic Machines announced that Brian LaBine has joined the company as president. Chris Lunt assumed the role of CEO. LaBine previously served as vice president of operations at Quebecor World's Retail Group and, prior to that, worked for Rockwell/Goss in a variety of sales and management positions. In addition, as part of a restructuring of the sales department, regional sales agents now report directly to the company through Dave Moreland, vice president of sales and marketing.
Kodak Polychrome Graphics reports it plans to continue its support of higher education, after donating more than $166,000 worth of technology and equipment to graphic arts colleges and universities in 2002. Institutions such as Arizona State University, California Polytechnic State University, Clemson University and Rochester Institute of Technology have received donations from KPG. In other news, Rob Pipe has been appointed as director, worldwide color proofing business. Pipe previously served as worldwide product manager, color proofing.
Heidelberg USA and graphic designer Charles Spencer Anderson, owner of Charles S. Anderson Design and CSA Images, are partnering to educate the creative community about digital design using variable data. Anderson and Heidelberg will also team up for industry events and projects that demonstrate to designers, print buyers and printers the range of applications and business opportunities that digital printing technology has to offer.

Mitsubishi Lithographic Presses recently held a golf-themed open house in Los Angeles. Guests included clients and prospective customers representing commercial printers, trade shops and publishers from California, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. Billed as "Diamond in the Rough," the event coincided with the recent launch of Mitsubishi's new 40˝ convertible perfector, the Diamond 3000R Double Diamond press. Also, Ken Kodama has been appointed corporate secretary and director of sales for sheetfed presses, succeeding Henry Sagesaka, who returned to company headquarters in Tokyo.
Colter & Peterson further expanded its range of services by purchasing all microcut related assets from Graphic Machinery and Systems (GMS). These assets have been organized in a new C&P division, C&P Microsystems LLC.
Enovation Graphic Systems announced the acquisition of the Enfield, CT, business (formerly known as Blooms Inc.) of Northeastern Graphic Supply based in Portland, ME. In other news, Enovation has gone live with its Astea Alliance software solution for nationwide customer service management.
Sun Chemical has created Vivitek, a services and and distribution company that offers a range of services and non-ink consumable products (fountain solutions, blankets, washes, densitometers, pH meters, etc.) for prepress, pressroom and finishing operations. The Vivitek sales and technical service is being headed by industry veterans Mike Stone and Nick Federico.
MAN Roland's 41˝ sheetfed system, the ROLAND 700, has reached a new production milestone, with the 15,000th printing unit of the press recently installed at a packaging/POP printer in Japan. The record-breaking 15,000th unit is part of a five-color press with coater that is now producing for the Toyouke packaging printing company in Kawasaki City. In other company news, Eric Belcher has moved up from his post as CFO to become COO of sheetfed operations. Steve Gilland takes over the role of CFO, joining MAN Roland from Nordstrom. Also, Timothy Mandich has been assigned as a sheetfed press sales representative in Wisconsin, and Susan Klutnick is the new Western regional sales manager for commercial web products.
Creo Inc. announced the appointment of Michael Ciaramella, former vice president of sales for Creo Americas, to the position of corporate director of sales development. Also, the company reports that the Prism Group, a supplier of integrated MIS software, is the newest partner in Creo's Networked Graphic Production. This initiative delivers modular solutions through Creo, Prism and other vendors' products to create a JDF-based print production environment.

Headed by Dr. Kenneth Stack, former vice president/general manager of Flint Ink's digital division and new president of Jetrion, the leadership team includes: Gary Swager, vice president of integrated solutions; Paul Edwards, technical director; Sean Skelly, director of product management; Dean Haertel, director of sales and marketing; Jason Oliver, director of sales and marketing of integrated solutions; Brad Scott, manufacturing manager; and Thomas Im, controller/finance.
