Nevada’s largest privately, owned full-service printing company, Las Vegas Color Graphics (LVCG), has signed a carbon offset agreement with Patagonia Sur, a conservation company that helps firms incorporate sustainability initiatives into their operational and marketing plans. On behalf of LVCG, Patagonia Sur will plant and maintain more than 10 acres of native-species trees in Patagonia, Chile.
Hopkins Printing, Columbus, OH, has been awarded the Agfa Graphics GreenWorks Environmental Recognition Award. Hopkins uses chemisty-free and low-chemistry plates, as well as a solvent recycling system, allowing the company to purchase less blanket wash. Curtis Packaging, Sandy Hook, CT, was also honored by the GreenWorks program. The printer reduced its annual energy costs by $32,000 by switching to Agfa’s Energy Elite plates two years ago.
Brown Printing, Waseca, MN, announced its partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Save Energy Now LEADER” program, meaning that Brown will voluntarily reduce its energy intensities by 25 percent or more over 10 years.
Phoenix Press, New Haven, CT, received an EPA Green Power Leadership Award on Oct. 20. In 2010, Phoenix constructed a wind turbine that produces about 165,000 kW hours of electricty per year. It provides 40 percent of Phoenix Press’s annual electricity use.

Domtar Corp. has expanded a licensing agreement with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to cover all Domtar’s EarthChoice products, including office paper. Domtar will make an annual contribution of $350,000 to WWF from the sale of its EarthChoice products.
Mohawk Fine Papers remains one of the EPA’s Top 50 Green Power Partners, currently ranking number 32, as well as ranking number 9 on the list of 100 percent Green Power Purchasers.
Heidelberg is calling for entries for its ECO Printing Award. The international environmental award for sustainable sheetfed offset printing is divided into two categories. Entries, which must be submitted in writing, are available at www.heidelberg.com/en/eco_-award and will be accepted until Jan. 31, 2011.
