Tecnau and SCREEN Showcase Technologies to Advance Short-Run Book Production
In a recent online presentation, representatives of SCREEN, a manufacturer of high-speed inkjet printing systems, and Tecnau, a manufacturer of finishing solutions, highlighted new systems designed to increase the speed and flexibility of short-run book production.
From SCREEN, this included its Truepress Jet520HD series inkjet printers, and the new Truepress Jet520HD Mono Press, which was set, in this case, to run a book application. SCREEN also highlighted its Jet520HD+ and 520HD AD, which includes an advanced drying system.
Tecnau demonstrated a variety of continuous feed and cutsheet production finishing solutions, including the Revolution 50 series for continuous roll to cut-and-stack. The company’s StreamFolder 5152 was highlighted for book block creation, and the Stack 5251 was demonstrated for double-cut direct-mail and transactional applications.
Innovations from Tecnau
Jeff Kewin, President, Americas and Asia Pacific for Tecnau, opened the company’s presentation by describing how he believes the industry in changing, particularly in the past year. There is a strong drive, he says, toward on-demand fulfillment and personalization – stating these factors are becoming increasingly important in staying competitive in today’s print segment. This, he said, drives the need for the use of more types of stock, production flexibility, and automated setups.
Providing a live demonstration from Tecnau’s demonstration center, Pete Dolfis, the company’s VP Americas, did a walkthrough of Tecnau’s portfolio of technologies, paying particular attention to it 1212 system for V2 sheet converting; its TC7000, the capabilities of which include cross cutting of book covers and photo books; and the Lieber 8870 book making system, which can fulfill “book of one” approaches and be fed by multiple output devices. Futher, Dolfis highlighted a robotic system for building, moving, and packing stacks.
Chris Wilhelm, Senior Account Manager, provided a walkthrough of the Revolution 50, a new system capable of running at speeds of up to 590 feet per minute that features built-in tensioning, web steering, adjustment controls outside of the paper path, and a timer to estimate roll run out. The Revolution 50, Wilhelm said, is built for heavy use, and can handle substrates up to 300 tsm. The system can also transmit production analytics in real time and maintain direct connection to Tecnau’s service structure. Scott Peterson, Tecnau’s Product Marketing Manager, described the unit’s double rewinding system, which can greatly minimize roll-change times.
Solutions from SCREEN
Representing SCREEN, Vice President of Marketing Mark Schlimme described the features and benefits of the Jet520HD, stating the system provides what customers of offset printing want from inkjet: Offset quality and the ability to print on coated and heavy papers. This, in an inkjet printer, he says, provides output that meets the expectations of offset, along with capability for full personalization. The Jet520HD system offers water-based inks for standard coated papers, 1200 dpi printheads, and three choices for drying systems: air heating, near infra-red, and a multiple-drum approach that offers effective drying with lower heat.
SCREEN’s 520HD Mono Press is a single-color, niche-focused, inkjet press designed to meet specific applications. Offering speeds of up to 150 meters per minute, the press works well on coated stock, and is designed to reduce power consumption, and maintain higher quality, all within a contact footprint. The system is great for the printing of monochrome book blocks, and can be controlled using a tablet computer.
Schlimme also highlighted SCREEN’s Equios Smart Factory Solution – a software system that speeds jobs through production, eliminates sorting, and provides a strong, useful link between ordering and production.
Together, Tecnau and SCREEN presented a compelling view on high-speed inkjet production, from data to book, print to finishing, with results that match the needs of customers with strong expectations for offset quality.
Tecnau will showcase many of its finishing solutions at PRINTING United Expo 2021, October 6-8 in Orlando, Fla., in booth 3416.
