Now you can select your Outfit-of-the-Day with just a glance on the wall. No need to check weather apps on your smartphone before getting ready to step out of the house. The Weather Poster, a Kickstarter project, designed by Oli Woods and his company, Typified, allows users to check the weather with a glance before leaving the house and also works as printed wall décor, according to the project’s Kickstarter page.
The page explains that smart ink is paired with a small computer to achieve this un-intrusive tech, and further explains the process used to create The Weather Poster:
“Smart ink is any ink that’s been engineered at a chemical level to change color in response to a certain stimulus. Our new technology allows the tiny computer to interface with the smart ink.”
It has a simple design, featuring an icon of whether to expect clouds, rain or sun at 8 a.m., 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m., for a day.
The Weather Poster can also be used as printed wall décor. The frame is made from American oak with a glass pane that makes it look like a piece of art, instead of a simple screen. It has an automatic sleep mode function and consumes less than 10 watts of power when fully on. Each poster is limited to a print run of 500, after which the design will be changed for each subsequent release.
The Weather Poster is available for $134 to early birds. Even though it gives free weather forecast access for two years, it will be $7.50 per year after that. It is the first product from the small company, which starts shipping from July 2019.
The Weather Poster is an interesting example of merging print and technology to create a beautiful, consumer-friendly product that provides real benefits beyond just a gimmick.
As an article from The Verge points out, “It’s a neat mix of analog and digital technology, even if you can just get that same forecast from your phone."
