Brown Opts for Sundays
WASECA, MN—Magazine and catalog specialist Brown Printing has ordered two new gapless web presses and three finishing systems from Goss International. A pair of 2x8 Sunday 3000/32 presses will be joined here by two Universal adhesive binders. A third Universal binder is slated for installation at Brown’s East Greenville, PA, facility.
Quadracci Honored by WOA
SEWICKLEY, PA—Thomas Quadracci, chairman and CEO of Quad/Graphics, has been named the recipient of the Web Offset Association’s (WOA) eighth annual VISION Award, named in honor of his late brother, Harry, who founded the Sussex, WI-based printer. He will be presented with the award during the WOA’s 54th annual management and technical conference in May.
Webb Adding DGM Press
WILLIAMSPORT, PA—Webb Communica-tions is installing a four-color DGM 440 from Dauphin Graphic Machines with 16 units and four heating towers. The press, part of the company’s $6.75 million expansion project, is slated to be installed in late July or early August, says Mark Lundberg, president of Webb. According to Lundberg, the DGM 440 will allow the publication printer to produce coated covers in-line along with the uncoated inside matter, a chore currently performed on two press lines. Webb Communications provides periodicals and mailing services for clients including unions and associations.
Anderberg-Lund Updates Gear
ST. LOUIS PARK, MN—Commercial printer and envelope manufacturer Anderberg-Lund recently added and ordered various equipment costing in excess of $500,000. Among the gear is a new two-color Sakurai press. Other additions to the arsenal include an HHS gluing system with Stahl continuous feed folder and a four-color Canon CLC 4000 digital printer with variable data personalization capabilities.
Burton Buys More Cenveo Stock
STAMFORD, CT—Robert Burton and various members of Cenveo’s senior management team and board of directors have acquired an additional $1 million worth of the company’s stock. Burton, who had been restricted from obtaining additional shares under Cenveo’s stock trading policy, now beneficially owns more than 3.1 million shares of the company’s common stock.
Order Reinstated on TKS
BOLINGBROOK, IL—Goss International, based here, gained a victory in its ongoing battle with Japanese newspaper press manufacturer Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho (TKS) when the U.S. Department of Commerce reinstated the antidumping duty order against TKS due to fraud. The charge of fraud against the department stems from a $35 million judgment won by Goss in federal court, where TKS was found to have violated the Antidumping Act of 1916 by dumping its products on the U.S. market. TKS vows to contest any reinstatement of the order.
Artcraft Obtains Bowne Facility
NORTH ATTLEBORO, MA—The Artcraft Co. has acquired The Vose Swain Engraving Co. of Boston from Bowne & Co., based in New York City. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. In conjunction with the deal, Artcraft also announced its complete shift to online print procurement.
Transcontinental Names CFO
MONTREAL—Transcontinental Inc. has appointed Benoit Huard to the position of vice president and CFO. Huard held the position on an interim basis prior to the appointment. He has 20 years of experience in senior positions related to financial management for companies including Quebecor Inc. and Avenor Inc.
New Web for Anderson
COMMERCE, CA—Anderson Lithograph, a member of the Cenveo network, has installed a six-color Mitsubishi Diamond 16 MAX-M single-web press. The press is equipped with a double-wide pinless combination folder and a pinless former folder. Able to produce 16-page signatures at speeds to 1,800 fpm, the new press employs metal-backed blankets and a mini-gap micro design.
Gans, 88, Founder of Gans Ink
LOS ANGELES—Bob Gans, 88, an old-school entrepreneur and showman who used hard work, wit and celebrities to hawk his company’s line of inks, passed away in February after a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Gans founded Gans Ink in 1950, which has grown to a $25 million a year business. Among the marketing techniques that Mr. Gans used, perhaps the best known print ads came courtesy of his relationship with iconic model and actress, Jayne Mansfield. He is survived by three daughters and seven grandchildren.
Fire Strikes Nacci Printing
ALLENTOWN, PA—A fire broke out recently at Nacci Printing, a 32-year-old commercial printer, according to the Allentown Morning Call. No injuries were reported and the extent of the damage was not known. Frank Nacci, president of the company, did not return several phone calls seeking further comment.
National Mail Graphics Expands
EXTON, PA—National Mail Graphics has completed a $4 million expansion project that includes a 12,000-square-foot addition, as well as a new six-color, 28˝ Miyakoshi MVF 22K UV web press. The new press joins a pair of Didde half-webs for National Mail Graphics, which serves various markets including direct mail, pharmaceutical and insurance.
Hilltop Taps Another UV Press
INDIANAPOLIS—Hilltop Press is scheduled to install an eight-color, 40˝ Komori LS840 sheetfed press this month. It is the company’s third 40˝ UV press; a six-color Komori was acquired in 2005. Hilltop serves the manufacturing and retail sectors, producing items such as point-of-purchase danglers and wobblers.
