RRD Names Richter New CFO
CHICAGO—Glenn Richter, former CFO for Sears, Roebuck and Co., has been named to fill the same role for RR Donnelley effective April 1. Richter replaces Kevin Smith, executive vice president and CFO. Richter brings big-name corporate experience to the Donnelley fold. Prior to joining Sears, he held several senior financial positions with Dade Behring Holdings. He also served various roles with PepsiCo Inc. and was a consultant with McKinsey & Co.
Times Taps Goss for Controls
NEW YORK—Six New York Times printing facilities are slated to receive press controls and digital inking as part of a phased press upgrade initiative. The enhancements will take place at the following facilities: Ocala, FL; Gainesville, FL; Lakeland, FL; Wilmington, NC; Spartanburg, SC; and Santa Rosa, CA. Since 2002, the New York Times has ordered more than 350 printing couples of Goss Digital Inking.
CGX Completes Kelmscott Deal
HOUSTON—Consolidated Graphics (CGX) has completed the acquisition of Kelmscott Communications, a former industry consolidator consisting of seven companies in five Midwest and West Coast states. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Kelmscott companies—Anderson Printing in Hollywood, CA; CDS Publications in Medford, OR; Maximum Graphics in Minneapolis; Orange County Printing in Irvine, CA; Printing Control Graphics in Seattle; and Watermark Graphics in San Francisco—registered $100 million in annual sales.
Bowne Relocating Headquarters
NEW YORK—Bowne & Co. is moving its home office from 345 Hudson St. to 200,000 square feet of space at 55 Water St. The move is scheduled for January of 2006. The move emphasizes the company's commitment to the city and its revitalization of lower Manhattan. New York City's largest office structure, 55 Water St. recently underwent a $156 million base-building renovation that included a massive restructuring of its technology infrastructure.
Neenah to Close Canadian Mill
ALPHARETTA, GA—Neenah Paper intends to close the smaller of its two pulp mills at its Terrace Bay, ON, pulp operation. The No. 1 mill, originally built in 1948, has annual capacity of approximately 125,000 metric tons of pulp. About 130 jobs will be impacted by the closure.
Fry Installs M-130 Web Press
MECHANICSBURG, PA—A four-color, five-over-five Goss M-130 heatset web offset press has debuted at Fry Communications as part of the printer's continuing expansion initiative. The press delivers signatures for 6x9˝ products with up to 32 pages in full process color or 64 pages in black-and-white or two-color. Fry Communications President Henry Fry believes the press offers a fresh alternative for book and directory publishers, providing paper and production savings.
PC Mailing Adds Trio of Systems
SAN ANTONIO, TX—PC Mailing has purchased three Kodak Versamark DS4350 UV printing systems to provide high resolution, variable data printing on a wide variety of substrates. Two of the systems were installed in the company's main facility here, with a third touching down at the company's new digs in Austin, TX. The systems can print on substrates such as glossy stocks, plastic cards, aqueous and UV coated papers, and film.
Stora Enso Touts Sustainability
WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI—In an effort to maintain standards consistent with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Stora Enso is using third-party certification organizations to identify and manage the environmental impact of its operations. They include environmental management and forest certification systems, group environmental performance targets, recycling, clean production and efficient energy use.
Mossberg Celebrates 75th Year
SOUTH BEND, IN—Mossberg & Co. is ringing in its 75th anniversary with an open house slated for May 19 at the company's headquarters here. The company, which employs 130 people, was founded in 1930 by Herman Mossberg. His grandson, James Hillman, is president and CEO of the company.
MAN Roland Consolidates
WESTMONT, IL—MAN Roland is consolidating its sheetfed press manufacturing operations, putting its Geisenheim, Germany, facility on "temporary hiatus" while shifting that facility's workload and an undetermined number of its 314 employees over to the main Offenbach, Germany, production plant. The future of its Mainhausen, Germany, plant is also up in the air as the company negotiates with that facility's labor force. The Printing Systems Division of MAN AG, parent company of MAN Roland, raised its operating profits to $3.9 million in 2004, a $38 million gain over 2003.
12-Color Perfector for Battlefield
BURLINGTON, ON—The first North American installation of a 12-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102-12-P perfecting press has taken place at Battlefield Graphics. The press features a double-sided MCS (modular coating system) and a CutStar Plus roll-to-sheet feeder.
Quebecor World Sells Facility
MONTREAL—Quebecor World plans to sell its facility in Torcy, France, to a group led by local management. Terms and conditions of the sale will be completed after a period of consultation with the appropriate authorities. The transaction is part of Quebecor World's plan to reorganize and improve efficiency in its French offset platform.
Cadmus Signs Pact Extension
RICHMOND, VA—Cadmus Communications has signed a multi-year contract extension with American Chemical Society (ACS) to provide print and related services. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Cadmus has printed and distributed ACS' 32 scholarly journals since 1996.
