Printer Wins Baldrige Award
FORT WORTH, TX—Branch-Smith Printing has received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the small business category. It is the nation's premier award for performance excellence and quality achievement. The Baldrige Award is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in conjunction with the private sector. The winners were announced by President Bush and Commerce Secretary Don Evans in November.
Ennis Acquires Calibrated Forms
DESOTO, TX—Ennis Business Forms has completed its acquisition of the outstanding stock of Columbus, KS-based Calibrated Forms Co. Calibrated designs, manufactures and markets printed business forms within the wholesale business forms marketplace. Calibrated becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary and will operate in the Forms Solutions Group within Ennis. Calibrated's owners, Jim Amyx and Kim Brown, will continue to lead Calibrated with the support of their management team.
PIA Names Chairman for 2003
ALEXANDRIA, VA—Michael A. Marcian, president of Corporate Press in Landover, MD, was recently named chair of the board of directors for Printing Industries of America (PIA). Marcian has long been involved with PIA, serving on the board of directors, the executive committee, the operating committee, and numerous other committees and task forces. In addition, he is active with his local affiliate, Printing and Graphic Communications Association (PGCA), having served as PGCA's president from 1996-1997.
WOA Seeks VISION Nominations
ALEXANDRIA, VA—The Web Offset Association (WOA) has announced its call for entries for the 5th Annual Harry V. Quadracci VISION Award, which is conferred to that heatset web offset industry executive (printer or supplier) who has reached an unsurpassed level of excellence and achievement in the industry. GATF Receives Training Grant
PITTSBURGH—The Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) was recently awarded a Susan Harwood Training Grant from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to develop an ergonomics training program for the printing industry. The goal of the program is to provide printers with specific guidelines on how to recognize, prevent and significantly reduce ergonomic hazards. Under the grant, GATF will conduct a train-the-trainer program, after which these trainers will conduct seminars, workshops and on-site training programs.
Ex-Baldwin CEO Heads Harland
ATLANTA—John T. Heald Jr. has been named president of Harland Printed Products. He replaces David Passman, who has left the company to pursue other opportunities. Heald has 30 years of experience, including 24 years of general management assignments, most recently as CEO of Baldwin Technology. Prior to that he was executive vice president of operations for Sappi Fine Paper North America.
Bowne Appoints New BGS CEO
NEW YORK—Bowne has appointed James E. Fagan Jr., 51, as president and CEO of Bowne Global Solutions (BGS). Fagan succeeds Carl D. Glaeser, who has headed the BGS unit since 1999 and has decided to leave the company after reaching his objective of taking BGS to industry leadership. Fagan has been senior vice president, strategy and new business development, for Bowne since May 2001 and COO for BGS since September 2002.
Wallace Promotes McGrath
LISLE, IL—Steve McGrath has been promoted to the newly created position of vice president of commercial print sales and marketing for Wallace Corp. Previously, he served as Wallace's director of commercial print marketing, as well as president of its Hillside print facility, its largest web printing facility.

Donnelley Logistics Adds Facility
WILLOWBROOK, IL—R.R. Donnelley Logistics is enhancing its consolidation and distribution network by opening a 670,000-square-foot facility in York, PA. In addition to delivering significant service improvements, the new facility will increase package processing capacity by approximately 40 million packages per year. The York facility is expected to be operational by the end of the second quarter 2003.
Church Printer Files Chapter 11
YOUNGSTOWN, OH—The nation's largest producer of church envelopes has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The American Paper Co. produces church envelopes for about 45,000 churches nationwide. The company plans to sell some assets to Aurora, MO-based church bulletin printer MWM Dexter, and close its Richmond, VA, facility, eliminating 25 jobs.
