Printcafe Closes Acquisition

PITTSBURGH—Printcafe Software has completed its acquisition of printChannel. Printcafe did not assume any printChannel obligations or liabilities other than in connection with certain customer contracts.Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Donnelley Exec to Head Oce

CHICAGO—Ronald E. Daly has resigned as president of R.R. Donnelley Print Solutions, the company's business responsible for magazine, book, telephone directory and catalog/retail insert printing, as well as premedia services, to become the CEO of Océ-USA Holding, the North American business of Océ N.V., based in the Netherlands. Michael B. Allen, executive vice president for R.R. Donnelley Print Solutions, and Robert S. Pyzdrowski, president of operations for R.R. Donnelley Print Solutions, will assume the responsibilities as co-leaders of the business unit for the near future. This transition is effective immediately.

Quad Names Regional Sales VPs

PEWAUKEE, WI—Quad/Graphics has enhanced its executive-level management with the appointment of three regional vice presidents of sales. Timothy Ohnmacht has been appointed vice president of Midwest sales, Robert Wachtendonk has been appointed vice president of East Coast sales, and Renee Lekan has been appointed vice president of West Coast sales.

Cadmus Closes Magazine Plant

RICHMOND, VA—Cadmus Communications has announced a plan to consolidate its magazine operation. The company will close its printing operation at East Stroudsburg, PA, immediately and relocate the work produced there to its facilities in Easton, PA, and Richmond, VA. Cadmus will also close its reprint operation in Easton, PA, and transfer this business to the company's existing reprint centers in Easton, MD, and Lancaster, PA; and relocate certain other manufacturing equipment to other facilities within Cadmus. These actions will eliminate approximately 200 positions or about 6 percent of the company's total work force.

Desbiens Fills Quebecor Post

MONTREAL—Michel Desbiens has been appointed to the newly created position of CEO, international operations, for Quebecor World. In this role, Desbiens will be responsible for the performance and development of all Quebecor World operations outside of North America. Previously, he served as president and CEO of Donohue.

Banta VP, CFO Resigns

MENASHA, WI—Daniel W. Kiener, vice president and CFO, has resigned from the Banta Corp. due to a family medical issue that requires him to return to his home in Pittsburgh, PA. Succeeding Kiener as interim CFO is Gerald A. Henseler, who retired as Banta executive vice president on August 1, 2002, following 36 years with Banta, 17 years as the corporation's CFO. Kiener's resignation becomes effective immediately.

Carolina Color Is Acquired

COLUMBIA, SC—Crowson Stone Printing has acquired Carolina Color Graphics of Charleston, SC. Crowson Stone acquired the assets of Carolina Color, including its manufacturing equipment and customer accounts. Crowson Stone's Charleston office will be relocated to the Carolina Color facility in North Charleston. The consolidated Charleston division will operate under the name Carolina Color Graphics. Ken Knight, the president of Carolina Color, will continue as general manager of the operation.

Bids Taken for 2004 Budget

WASHINGTON—The Bush administration has advertised for competitive bids to print four of the five volumes of the president's 2004 budget. The Congress' Government Printing Office—which has been the official printer since 1921—will still produce the largest volume, which requires specialized work, but must now join the open bidding process for the other four volumes. In May, the White House Office of Management and Budget announced that the administration would open up bidding to outside printers for executive branch printing work.

Von Hoffmann Names CFO

SAINT LOUIS—Von Hoffmann, a leading North American educational and commercial printer, has named Gary C. Wetzel as senior vice president and CFO. Prior to joining Von Hoffmann, Wetzel held the position of group vice president, finance and administration with Quebecor World. Previous to Quebecor World, Wetzel worked for Heidelberg Web Press.

Paramount Hosts Open House

BEAVERTON, OR—Paramount Graphics celebrated its latest expansion recently with an open house reception that attracted more than 275 print buyers and graphic arts executives. The event was centered on Paramount's new MAN Roland 700, a six-color model with an in-line double coating unit. The 41˝ press was installed last spring.

NPC Adds New Stitcher

CLAYSBURG, PA—NPC, a full-service, digital and printed document services provider, has expanded its saddle stitching capabilities with the installation of a Muller Martini Prima SB. The new addition is configured with six pockets, a cover folder feeder and an integrated ink-jet system. This new piece of equipment is part of an overall expansion of both its equipment and building.

Newspaper Buys New Press

KANSAS CITY, MO—The Kansas City Star, owned by the Knight-Ridder media group, is expanding its printing and color capabilities with two parallel KBA Commander press lines with a total of 216 couples, 36 towers, 40 reelstands and four folders. Installation is scheduled for early 2004.

Corporate Image Adds New Gear

DES MOINES, IA—Corporate Image recently installed a six-color, 40˝ MAN Roland 700, a 40˝ Fuji imagesetter, Rampage workflow software and a D&K 3215 laminator.
