Sustainability is one of the top concerns of today’s consumers, and the environmental impact of packaging - both positive and negative - can play a role in a consumer’s decision on whether to purchase a product.
Mintel, a market intelligence agency, recently released its Global Packaging Trends for 2018, which includes a trend titled “Packaged Planet.” This trend indicates that while consumers once largely considered packaging as wasteful and having a negative environmental impact, there is now an increasing awareness of the sustainability benefits it can provide.
David Luttenberger, Mintel’s global packaging director, stopped by the packagePRINTING video studio to discuss these 2018 trends. He explained that at first glance, shrink wrapping a fruit or vegetable that has a natural protective skin my seem extraneous, but in reality, this type of packaging can help keep that item fresh for a longer period of time, thus reducing food waste. The key for brands however, will be in leveraging packaging to communicate these benefits to consumers.
