ELKHORN, Wis. - December 6, 2017 - Yunker Industries, a family-owned company of 70 years, is the latest company to join the Wisconsin Green Tier program. Yunker was officially welcomed into the program during a ceremony held at its headquarters.
Yunker is currently the only printer that is both in Green Tier and certified in the SGP (Sustainable Green Printing Partnership) program. Yunker Industries achieved the SGP certification in February 2017.
"Yunker Industries is taking its role as a sustainability leader seriously," said John Budzinski, Department of Natural Resources acting Secretary's Director. "We are all enthusiastic about your achievements to date and look forward to more accomplishments in the future."
Green Tier encourages businesses and other organizations to voluntarily collaborate with the Department of Natural Resources to move beyond compliance with regulations and to achieve superior environmental performance. An applicant must have a good environmental record and commit to exceeding environmental standards.
Both Wisconsin's Green Tier program and the national Sustainable Green Printing Partnership program require participants to operate with an Environmental Management System (EMS). EMSs help companies systematically prevent pollution, increase efficiency, comply with laws, promote safety, and make positive environmental contributions.
"Yunker Industries is excited about the continuous improvement process that stems from our EMS," said Nadine Seitz, Marketing Manager/Green Team Committee Member.
Yunker President and CEO Kari Yunker added, "It was not an easy task, but well worth the benefits of establishing and implementing a formal program for sustainability that delivers value and results for our company, our customers and our community."
Yunker Industries has a track record of environmental initiatives and has been actively managing and tracking its environmental performance for decades. Yunker lowered its air emission by over 80 percent since 2006.
Recently Yunker installed a Packsize box making machine so they can design and produce boxes on demand to the required size and quantity in a just-in-time manner. Yunker also recently acquired an automated bubble wrap machine that produces an environmentally friendly product that is biodegradable. Both of these machines minimize the frequency of supply deliveries to Yunker while reducing inventory and space requirements. The company has also recently signed on with UPS to be part of a carbon neutral shipping program.
During the ceremony, long-time employee, Mark Huckstorf was recognized for his 41 years of environmental management with Yunker Industries. He initiated many of the company's environmental endeavors that form the baseline for future projects. Mark instilled a strong environmental passion in other Sustainability Team members at Yunker.
The team will work to accomplish goals set forth in the company's Environmental Management System and Sustainability Policy. Yunker Industries will continue to work with vendors and other companies to continuously improve manufacturing processes, reduce waste, utilize fewer non-recyclable materials and reduce energy consumption.
