The debate about how to handle packaging at its end-of-life shows no end in sight. The National Waste & Recycling Association released a new industry position opposing local and state government mandates regarding product stewardship for printed paper and packaging.
“Advocates may promote legislation mandating ‘product stewardship’ programs for printed paper and packaging as a way to increase recycling rates and make retailers ‘pay’ for recycling—but these kinds of programs are rife with pitfalls and unintended consequences,” said Sharon H. Kneiss, president and CEO of Waste & Recycling.

Resolute Forest Products has added two more superbrite grades, Hybrid and Alternative, to its Align brand of environmentally responsible and budget-friendly papers by adding.
Glatfelter, a global supplier of specialty papers and fiber-based engineered materials headquartered in York, PA, is joining Two Sides. "We join with Two Sides in the effort to educate the public about the true sustainability of paper," said Brian Janki, vice president and general manager of Glatfelter’s Specialty Papers Business Unit.
Neenah Paper announces the relaunch of its Environment Papers premium recycled papers line with fresh, new natural colors and a tactile Raw finish. Created for sustainable communication programs, luxury packaging and all digital print applications, the offering contains 30 to 100 percent postconsumer fibers and is manufactured under sustainable practices.
Paper has gotten a bad rap in recent years. Detractors claim paper manufacturing leads to mass deforestation and contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. While paper supply chains could certainly use an overhaul, some of the arguments against using paper are just plain wrong.
"What people often don't realize is that the paper-making process is sustainable, and claims to the contrary are misleading to the consumer," said Mark Pitts, executive director of printing-writing, at the American Forest And Paper Association (AFANDPA).

In its effort to put an end to unsubstantiated and misleading claims that electronic communications are more environmentally friendly than print and paper, Two Sides U.S. announced that over 20 leading U.S. companies have removed their “anti-paper” green claims.
