I had the pleasure speaking at the Digital Book Printing Conference co-hosted by Printing Impressions and Book Business magazines on Nov. 19th in New York City. Although I spoke about the technical aspects of integrating inkjet printing into their digital printing processes, it was very evident throughout the conference that “printed” books are decreasing.
If the 2014 campaign taught us anything, it's not to underestimate the value of a good education. And, from the book manufacturing point of view, the clamoring of presses could only mean one thing: Adoption cycles are back in full force. Most segments served by Chicago-based RR Donnelley enjoyed moderate to strong performances across the board in 2014.
Johnson & Quin Inc. in Niles, IL, has added a Screen Truepress Jet520ZZ color inkjet printing system, with production expected to begin in early December. St Louis-based The Flesh Co. has purchased a new Domino K600i inkjet unit for its label division at the the 2014 Labelexpo show. The new unit is expected to be delivered, installed and in operation by year end. Additional support equipment has also been purchased to support roll label orders which is a growing part of the company's label offering, servicing the trucking, warehouse, distribution and Etailer markets.
Facing flat or declining revenues, more than a few commercial printers are on the lookout for new opportunities to expand their offerings, drive growth and add new revenue. One compelling move can be a segue into packaging, especially labels and folding cartons, where printing expertise is required and the margins—often 9 percent or more—offer an attractive way to increase profitability while also adding value to one's business.
