It's hard to believe that this marks the 29th anniversary of our annual Printing Impressions 400 list of the largest printers in the United States and Canada ranked by annual sales. The consolidation trend has intensified, albeit more from the result of shrinking print markets coupled with the economic fallout from the Great Recession.

After 78 years of family ownership, Jim Motheral, president of Motheral Printing, announced that his company has been sold to Ovation Graphics. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ovation also recently purchased Fort Worth's Branch-Smith Printing and is affiliated with Ussery Printing, of Irving, TX.

Ovation Graphics purchased substantially all of the business assets of Branch-Smith Printing. As part of its purchase, Ovation Graphics obtained the rights to the Branch-Smith name. The 102-year-old firm had been owned by the Branch family for more than a century.

The over 6,000 sq. ft. facility, which is within 10 minutes of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, provides efficient one-day demo and training seminars for busy printer customers. The new Customer Center features a partnership with ClimatePartner, as well as using “green” consumables, such as biodegradable shop cloths.

AS AN economically unstable 2008 gives way to a poten- tially more tumultuous 2009, printers from the Sunshine State to Washington State are tightening their belts, digging in and preparing for the worst.
