Erv Drewek of Brown Printing in Waseca, MN, was elected for the Postmaster Generals’ Mailers' Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) vice-chair position. As the vice-chair, Drewek, along with other committee members, will oversee the activities of the Leadership Committee, gathering information on how to enhance the value of mail-related products and services.
WASECA, MN—Brown Printing has released the following statement in regard to its Aug. 29 chemical scare, which prompted a plant evacuation.
The Brown Printing Waseca, MN, plant was evacuated last Thursday as a result of mixing two reactive chemicals used in the cooling water of the chillers. The chemicals involved are ones that are normally mixed, but not in that concentration, causing a vapor discharge not normally experienced.
WASECA, MN—An early morning mixture of two chemicals on Thursday produced an abnormal vapor release and prompted the evacuation of up to 200 employees at Brown Printing, according to the Waseca County News.
Around 6:50 a.m. Thursday a call for assistance came into Waseca County Dispatch after two chemicals at Brown Printing accidentally combined.
The building was evacuated for precautionary measures and all employees are safe and accounted for, according to Human Resources Director Jamie Tech. Waseca County Dispatch said those taken to the hospital were treated for precautionary measures.
The type of chemicals that were combined is not known at this time. The combining of the chemicals is part manual and part automatic and its still being determined what part of the process may have been compromised. No chemicals were spilled.

The alliance between the two Waseca, MN, printing companies, Brown Printing and Clear Lake Press, will pool the resources of both companies to offer “a more comprehensive suite of print solutions” to customers, according to a news release.
The companies are not expecting to add or cut jobs as a result of the alliance, said Dan Nitz, president and CEO of Clear Lake Press, save for a part-time employee who may be bumped up to full-time.
Brown Printing is Waseca’s largest employer, providing nearly 800 jobs at its Waseca site and 2,200 across its three locations.
