CHICAGO—Penton Media has filed a prepackaged plan of reorganization under Chapter 11, the publisher announced on Tuesday. The parent company of American Printer and Paper, Film & Foil Converter magazines, Penton is saddled with more than $1 billion in liabilities. Its assets fall between $500 million and $1 billion, according to court documents.
The largest trade debt creditor was magazine printer Worldcolor, which was listed as being owed $1.59 million. Next came fellow printer R.R. Donnelley, which is owed $1.41 million. Other notable creditors include Hallmark Data Systems ($532,661.38), Brown Printing ($207,814.64), ON24 ($114,577), QuadGraphics ($81,885.48) and direct marketing media company Walter Karl ($63,273.72).

Minnesota legislators hope to close a loophole they say is hurting the state’s printing companies. Ten days ago, Brown Printing announced plans to trim 8 percent from its workforce at all three of its U.S. plants. In Waseca, where approximately 1,000 people are employed, layoffs are expected to be in the range of 80 to 100 employees over the next few weeks, according to Harry Popiel, Vice President Human Resources.
WASECA, MN—Brown Printing has been awarded a $90 million-plus multi-year contract to produce the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) catalog and circular programs. The agreement builds upon an 18-year relationship between Brown and AAFES, which is a multi-channel retailer that offers products to authorized customers via catalog, retail stores and online. The programs include catalogs and a weekly circular offering 30,000 items to its customer base.
