Geoffrey Lewis has a simple philosophy that has served him well during a long career in the commercial and consumer electronics industry: “I go to bed dreaming of what I want to do, wake up believing I have the capabilities to get it done, and then spend the day getting it done.”
We’ve created a snapshot of products that will be
prominently displayed on the PMA@CES show floor at the Las Vegas Hilton this year. Imagine, no annoying bus rides back and forth from the Sands.

For nearly 60 years, Villanova University Graphic Services operated out of one of the most unique facilities in the industry: an old house. Once a residence and later a dormitory, the building had 12 rooms, eight of which housed the in-plant's equipment and offices. A two-color Presstek/ABDick 9982 press filled one room; in another sat a Presstek Vector TX52 computer-to-plate system, a Xerox DocuColor 5000AP and a Canon imagePROGRAF iPF8300 wide-format printer; the bindery and shipping departments were in the garage.

Any printer that is able to experience modest growth, let alone stellar, certainly stands out in the sea of red ink, closures and bankruptcies that marked 2012. A small cadre of performers were able to do more than just survive.
The first component of Telepathic Graphics’ expansion was the addition of three Canon imagePRESS 7010VP digital presses. Then the two companies worked in partnership to achieve a solution for combining offset and digital work, streamlining the printer’s process to create an “input once, output to many” environment.

Whether to outsource—or not—critical tasks is not a decision that is made lightly. When it comes to wide-format technical document printing, the most cost effective solution might be a surprise: it’s often the in-house option. Océ, a Canon Group company, offers a simple cost analysis and outlines the benefits of printing wide-format documents in-house.
TRUMBULL, CT—As many as 135 jobs are expected to be cut at Océ North America as part of an integration plan developed since it was acquired by Canon Inc. three years ago, the Connecticut Post reported. A majority of the cuts will be made at its headquarters here, with the bulk of the layoffs coming on New Year's Eve.
Océ North America, the Trumbull-based provider of printers and copiers, will lose 135 jobs in Connecticut as a result of consolidations taking place three years after its being acquired by a Japanese company. James Magrone, an Océ spokesman, said the cuts are part of an overall integration plan that has been developed over three years since Canon Inc. bought the copier and office equipment company.
Canon on Oct. 26 reported quarterly earnings that fell 35 percent from a year ago, with revenue from its office division, which includes Océ, down more than 13 percent to $5.2 billion.
If you've been following the printing world—and if you're reading this column we've got a hunch that you have—you know that advances in digital printing have transformed the technology from the world of the small-run to a viable print-on-demand option for publishers of all sizes and stripes. But don't be fooled: Digital and offset lithography remain quite different beasts.
Helping customers save time and money is every in-plant's mission. So when Sun Life Financial's Document Services Group discovered that a department was hiring temps to manually stuff envelopes—and taking a week to 10 days to do it—John Moschilli had to take action.
At Graph Expo, digital press vendors highlighted their workflow and digital front end capabilities, enabling everything from transpromotional and variable data printing to ganging of smaller jobs into longer production runs. The emphasis was on automation, personalization and run-length optimization.
Just as we were finalizing this issue, Hurricane Sandy slammed into our area. The storm closed down Philadelphia for two days, including IPG's offices, and brought major damage to the surrounding areas.
With offset presses becoming scarce on the show floor and digital vendors pushing for higher volume and larger B2-format machines, digital presses are becoming the "big iron" components of the GRAPH EXPO show. Almost without exception, digital press vendors highlighted their workflow and digital front end (DFE) capabilities.
There was a lot of positive energy at GRAPH EXPO 2012 and most booths were generally busy. My sense from vendors was that business is (finally) coming back. “Doesn’t it look a lot like the old On Demand Show when we used to have it at Javits in New York? You walk in and all you see is digital press companies.”
