A decade ago, a cataclysm rocked the photography business as digital image sensors replaced fim. It turns out that was just the beginning.
At the Photokina show, it was clear a second wave of change is sweeping through the industry. Cameras produced during the first digital photography revolution looked and worked very similarly to their film precursors, but now designers have begun liberating them from the old constraints.
Three big developments are pushing the changes: a new class of interchangeable-lens cameras, the arrival of smartphones with wireless networking, and the sudden enthusiasm
Like clockwork, at the end of summer and as fall begins, most camera manufacturers announce their new products. It coincides with Photokina, the world's biggest and most important photography trade show and the upcoming holiday shopping season.
And what's more, it looks like we are gearing up for another Nikon vs. Canon battle with their new full-frame, small-profile, video-ready DSLR offerings: the Nikon D600 with a 24.3 megapixel FX - CMOS sensor and the Canon EOS 6D featuring 20.2 megapixel CMOS sensor.
The In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association conference brought 150 in-plant managers together in Kansas City recently.
Recognizing that digital printing has become a mainstream technology, offset printers are increasingly adding digital capabilities to their repertoire of offerings. In some shops, short-run jobs are run entirely on digital presses. Some do short-runs on a digital device and a longer runs of the same job on a offset machine. Others combine variable content digital pages with those from an offset press in the same job.
In each case, colors have to match and the overall look and feel of the document must meet customers' requirements with minimal differences. This webinar will discuss how printers are successfully using the best features of both technologies AND managing color across offset and digital presses.
Our expert panelists will share their experiences on such key issues as:
- Ensuring jobs run on different devices look the same
- Managing paper selections
- Setting customer expectations
- Color management tools and profiles used for success
- Managing color for logos and other branding requirements

The typical in-plant print operation doesn't have the "luxuries" enjoyed by most commercial print shops. Many have small plants with little space for new equipment, and the layout makes moving documents cumbersome. Almost half have no online submission capabilities, and every job is needed yesterday. On top of that, in-plant managers face stringent financial constraints when seeking improvements.
In this webinar, in-plant managers from three different companies discuss key issues such as tuning shop capabilities to company needs, new equipment and software selection and cost-justifying technology investments.
View this hour-long session for expert advice about:
* selecting the best equipment for your needs
* revising shop layouts to reduce bottlenecks
* increasing automation to improve efficiency
* and the steps you need to take to increase the value your shop offers the company.

Canon says that the EOS 6D is their lightest and smallest full-frame DSLR to date. You can also add cheapest to complete the trio of descriptors. The Canon EOS 6D weighs only 6900g, that’s 20% lighter than Canon 5D Mark II.
Headling Canon's barrage of cameras at the show: the EOS 6D. While the company has had the cheapest full-frame camera available since the 5D Mark III shipped and it dropped the price of the 5D Mark II, the latter (while still an excellent camera) has an old autofocus system and needed some performance updating. Especially if it were going to stand up to Nikon's recently announced D600. But Canon took away some of the features of the 5DM2 for the 6D, such as the 100-percent coverage viewfinder, substituting Wi-Fi and GPS.
