FOR several years, camera makers have trained their engineering expertise on the sweet spot between compact point-and-shoot cameras and chunky (yet capable) D.S.L.R.s. An ideal combination would involve a small chassis, a big image sensor, the ability to swap out interchangeable lenses and snap-simple ease of use. Todays mirrorless interchangeable lens (MIL) cameras deliver all that and more. They provide high-quality photos, particularly in low lighting, by employing large image sensors. To economize on size, these cameras omit the space-hogging pentaprism and mirror found in traditional D.S.L.R. cameras

Device manufacturers spend billions each year on designing, marketing, and advertising their products. That's what they need to do to get you to the counter to buy. Whether you're doing some self-indulgent shopping or finding the perfect gift, there are a lot of fancy new cameras this year. We've dragged dozens of models through the ringer in our ultra-scientific testing labs to come up with the best picks for every budget. One thing these cameras all have in common: they take great photos and mere mortals can afford them.
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, so, too, comes the start of the holiday shopping mayhem. Once again, digital cameras are rocketing to the top of wish lists, and once again, shoppers are tentatively entering electronics stores with bewildered looks on their faces.
To alleviate some of that shopping stress, I've compiled a buyer's guide for different camera categories with prices and pointers to innovation. This year, manufacturers have improved photo-location tagging and are offering artistic photo alteration and clever ways to label images for future sharing on social networks.
