Cenveo plans to shut down its Dallas envelope manufacturing plant and lay off 71 employees next month, according to The Dallas Morning News. The plant at 10700 Harry Hines Blvd. will close by July 30 and the company gave no reason for the permanent closure in a filing with the Texas Workforce Commission, the newspaper reported.
For its first quarter of 2011, Cenveo recorded operating income of $22.2 million, an increase of approximately 82 percent compared to $12.2 million in the first quarter of 2010, and net income of $2.8 million vs. a net loss of $11.1 million.
For the quarter, its net sales were $460.4 million, an increase over the $456.8 million reported for the same period in the previous year. The company had a net loss of $9.8 million, as compared to a net loss of $9.4 million for the quarter in 2010.
A few weeks back, Cenveo Chairman and CEO Bob Burton made national headlines (including on Yahoo! and ESPN) when he voiced his displeasure with the University of Connecticut’s hiring of a new football coach and threatened to rescind a $3 million donation to the program. He also asked that his name be removed from the Burton Family Football Complex.

For the second consecutive year, NPC (News Printing Co.) of Claysburg, PA, heads the list. More than 1,700 print suppliers obtained GPO work during FY2010. The value of all GPO work awarded to them during this period was $358 million compared to $425 million awarded in FY2009.
MeadWestvaco Corp. (MWV) has agreed to sell its Envelope Products Group to Cenveo Inc. In an unrelated transaction, Cenveo has also acquired Impaxx Inc.—the sole owner of Gilbreth Packaging Solutions—from affiliates of Aurora Capital Group.
