PHILADELPHIA—There is new veteran leadership at Phoenix Lithographing, based here, as Scott Thorell has been appointed to the position of president and James Mele as executive vice president of sales.
CHICAGO—RR Donnelley reported first-quarter net earnings of $33.9 million on net sales of $2.6 billion compared to $52.6 million on net sales of $2.4 billion in the first quarter of 2010. The first-quarter net earnings included pre-tax charges for restructuring ($42.7 million) and impairment ($8.1 million, non-cash) and acquisition-related costs ($0.4 million) totaling $51.2 million in 2011 compared to charges for restructuring ($14.5 million) and impairment ($1.0 million, non-cash) and acquisition-related costs ($2.0 million) totaling $17.5 million in 2010.
Revenue for CGX’ March quarter totaled $258.1 million, an increase of 8.9 percent. The higher revenues resulted from a 5.3 percent improvement in same-store sales and the impact of acquisitions. Adjusted operating income increased 71 percent, to $17.7 million.
Scott Thorell has been appointed to the position of president and James Mele named executive vice president of sales. Thorell was the president of Tursack Printing, a Consolidated Graphics company, for the past 12 years. Mele worked at McKella280 (formerly Citation Graphics) for more than 19 years.
The entire Heritage Graphics staff will be joining the Ironwood team at its Tempe, AZ, facility and the combined company will operate under the Ironwood Lithographers name. “Both companies were profitable and thriving independently in a difficult economy, and combining the two entities will allow Consolidated Graphics to maximize our service offerings in Arizona and throughout the Southwest region of the country,” said Joe R. Davis.
Frederic Printing, a Consolidated Graphics company in Aurora, CO, has completed its second installation of the InfoPrint 5000 color inkjet press to enable the printing of high-quality print-on-demand (POD) textbooks, direct mail pieces and election ballots.
The six-unit Goss M-500, along with the Cyril-Scott's existing fleet of 15 heatset web presses, further positions it as a premier provider of direct marketing and production services. “With our new fully operational M-500, we look forward to providing our customers with increased versatility and the highest-quality print production services available in the marketplace,” said President Matt Coltharp.
