The Green Scene NEEDHAM, MA—Atlantic Printing is in its final stage of transition toward a “totally green” offset printing process. Atlantic employs a combination of chemical-free plate making technology (Agfa’s Accento thermal CTP system, which utilizes Agfa’s Azura chemical-free plates), 100 percent soy-based inks (a renewable source that is naturally low in VOCs) and recycled papers (the printer has obtained Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of- Custody certification). CANTON, MA—Several “green” initiatives, including garnering the Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody certification, have been implemented at Next Generation Printing. The company is also using more recycled papers, including a new “house stock” FSC-certified mixed sheet with 50 percent recycled content,
CHICAGO—The 20th annual Gold Ink Awards and Hall of Fame Gala drew more than 300 attendees to the McCormick Place Grand Ballroom during Graph Expo last month, with the Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame opening the doors to four new inductees. During the course of the evening, which included a cocktail reception prior to the dinner, four prominent members of the printing industry joined the ranks with 82 men and two women previously enshrined. Those honored were Tim Poole, president of Dome Printing; Chris Colville, retired CFO and executive vice president of Consolidated Graphics; Gary Samuels, managing partner at Pictorial Offset; and David
ALTHOUGH THEY’VE taken different paths to earn their places in the 2007 Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame, this year’s class of inductees portray several common traits that have led to successful business careers and the admiration among their industry peers. Upbringing, printing experiences and personalities may differ among them, but the threads that have woven the fabric of their lives are all laced with gold. Take David Torok, president and CEO of Padgett Printing, for example. A former U.S. Army captain, David epitomizes the leadership skills necessary to command a thriving printing operation. In 18 years since taking the helm at Padgett,
NO MATTER how many times Chris Colville sat down with a legal pad and calculator to perform due diligence in analyzing a potential acquisition for Consolidated Graphics (CGX) of Houston, he kept two things in mind. One, it required sound judgment to determine the industry’s highest quality companies and their valuations. It is the trait that has enabled CGX to hand pick only the finest businesses the market has to offer and, in the process, compile a balance sheet that is the envy of printers everywhere. Equally as important, no matter how many major deals Colville and CGX had consummated, it was important
HOUSTON—Consolidated Graphics (CGX) has enjoyed an eventful summer on the M&A front, acquiring boutique commercial printer Pikes Peak Lithographing of Colorado Springs, CO, and The Cyril Scott Co. of Lancaster, OH. Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Pikes Peak specializes in large-format sheetfed printing, producing banners, fine art reproductions, maps and point-of-purchase displays on a variety of substrates, including synthetics and plastics. It will maintain production at its two Colorado Springs facilities. In an earlier move, CGX signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire Cyril Scott, a commercial printer that produces multi-featured print products for the direct mail market, including pop-up/pop-out nested designs and kiss-cut
TO PARAPHRASE a gag from the late, great comedian Rodney Dangerfield, “I went to Graph Expo the other day and an On Demand show broke out.” If imitation is really the sincerest form of flattery, then the On Demand folks should be downright blushing at the degree of digital technologies that will be offered when Graph Expo storms into Chicago’s McCormick Place South complex from September 9-12. Not that the Graphic Arts Show Co. (GASC), Graph Expo’s producer, is out to steal another show’s thunder; rather, it is only a telltale sign of the trend that is enabling printers across North America to

HOUSTON—Chris Colville, executive vice president and CFO for Consolidated Graphics (CGX), but best known for orchestrating many of the company’s biggest deals, announced he is leaving the company at the end of June to pursue other interests. This was the second tenure at CGX for Colville, who departed the company in 2000 to become managing director of Murphy Noell Capital in Westlake Village, CA. He returned to CGX in 2002. “Although not a printer in the traditional sense, the printing industry has been very good to me,” Colville told Printing Impressions. “I’ve met many, many great people whom I respect and admire, including Joe Davis and
