Freedom Graphic Systems
Marty Liebert, the founder, president and CEO of Freedom Graphic Systems in Milton, WI, has built his direct mail empire from scratch to the $145 million mark in less than 30 years. He dodged a few business bullets in the process, and it has earned him a place among the 2014 Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame induction class.
Printing Impressions has announced the winners of the 2014 Gold Ink Awards. This year's Gold Ink Award winners were chosen from more than 1,000 entries submitted within nearly 50 categories. Winning pieces surpassed their competitors based on print quality, technical difficulty and overall visual effect.
The more evolved of the printing industry's species will be on hand at Chicago's McCormick Place South from Sunday, Sept. 28, to Wednesday, Oct. 1. The non-evolved in our midst, as Ralph Nappi, president of the Graphic Arts Show Co. (GRAPH EXPO's organizer), observes, will spend that time "pulling in their horns" instead.
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is certainly not doing the direct mail space any favors, requesting an exigent rate increase of 4.3 percent. With postage taking up the better part of 60 percent from the direct mail marketing spend, there's less and less meat on the bone. But the USPS has its own problems, and thus far nothing Postmaster Patrick Donahoe has done could spur Congress into addressing the issue of postal reform.
