CENTREVILLE, MD—Tidewater Direct, a web offset printing company with three plants in the United States, has purchased an eight-unit Goss Sunday 2000 printing press to install at its 100,000-square-foot facility here.
Digital technologies captured many of the headlines during drupa 2012, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t a host of newsworthy lithographic press introductions, technology demonstrations and productivity enhancements shown within the stands of traditional press manufacturers.
Orders for 11 Goss web presses were signed during the show, which ran from May 3-16 in Düsseldorf, Germany. A Packaging Theatre was the centerpiece of the Goss booth, attracting large audiences throughout the show for demonstrations of the all-new Goss Sunday Vpak variable sleeve web offset press units for folding carton, film and label applications.
Working closely with Newsday, Goss is combining components from existing Metro presses at the site to create three enhanced press systems with the capacity to print 96 tabloid pages, including 64 full-color pages, at up to 60,000 impressions per hour.
With one Goss M-800 press in operation at its facility in Mexico, commercial printer Grupo Ajusco placed an order for a second one at the drupa trade show. “The overall performance of our first M-800 press, and in particular the high print quality, led us to invest in the second one,” according to Sergio Torres, owner of Grupo Ajusco
ROCHESTER, NY—A Sunday 2000 web offset press consigned to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and its Printing Applications Lab (PAL) is being dismantled and sold after 10 years of service, according to the school's student-run Reporter magazine.
The Sunday Vpak 3000 and Sunday Vpak 500 presses are taking center stage at the Goss stand, making their "world first" appearance at drupa. Based on the Sunday gapless press concept, the Vpak presses make web offset an increasingly attractive alternative for folding carton, flexible packaging, pre-print and label printing.
