Printing Industries of America is pleased to announce that James Hammer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hammer Packaging in Rochester, NY, is the recipient of the 2008 Lewis Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award. Established in 1950, the Lewis Award is recognized throughout the graphic arts industry as the highest honor awarded to any individual in the business.
Robert M. Williamson, an internationally known educator, consultant, and author of books including Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Equipment Management, has been named keynote speaker for the 2009 Printing Industries of America Continuous Improvement Conference taking place April 5-8 in Lexington, KY.
As part of the transition from PIA/GATF to Printing Industries of America, the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (GATF) has been renamed the Center for Technology and Research. For over fifty years, GATF provided the printing industry with professional, unbiased, third-party testing and information and will continue to do so through this Center.
In an effort to promote the many exciting career opportunities within the graphic communications industry, and showcase the extraordinary talent of our youth, the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF®) has launched a 2009 National Student Design Competition, themed “Careers in Graphic Communications…Imagine the Possibilities!”. The competition will challenge students to create and produce a marketing product designed to appeal to our industry's future workforce. Participants will be encouraged to be creative and take their design from concept to finished product.
With the theme, "Igniting Green Media Business Growth, Innovation & Resilience - Being Lean, Green and Profitable in a Shrinking Economy," The Business of Green Media Conference will address "bottom line" issues about not only how to implement sustainable practices, but how to do it profitably. This topic is extremely revalent for all media producers and purchasers. The conference that will take place on the Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo on January 22.

NPES equipment shipment data for the 3rd quarter came in at $361.9 million which was down 5.6% from 2007 levels. Unfortunately... that’s the good news and the bad all rolled into one. It was good that things didn’t get any worse despite the fact that the U.S. economy has clearly deteriorated, but it was bad that we didn’t get a boost from sales at drupa 2008.
The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF®) is pleased to announce that, for the first time ever, a prison inmate has been awarded a PrintED® certification. John Phillips, 41, an inmate at the Northern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility in Moundsville, WV received a certification in Offset Press Operations after passing an online standardized PrintED examination.
