Heidelberg USA is proud to announce that the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has printed the official photographs of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on a 4-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 perfector. The photographs will hang in more than 7,000 federal installations managed by the U.S. General Services Administration.

How-to for "ghost" busters
During printing, “ghosting” occurs when printing form elements other than the desired positive or negative ones duplicate themselves onto the printed surface. An optimal balance between ink and dampening solution helps prevent ghosting.

Printing Industries of America’s 2009 Presidents Conference last week was a hit for attendees with the solutions-based discussions and topics. With over 30 sessions packed into a short three-day program, attendees walked away with numerous methods, techniques and suggestions to weather the current economic storm. The theme of “New Directions, Bolder Thinking” aptly identified the value of the program.
According to the NAPL Printing Economic Research Center (PERC), while the printing industry has been hit hard by the economic downturn, it is by no means alone. Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, & Orders report, printing was one of ten major manufacturing groups in which shipments fell in 2008.

Heidelberg reports that C&S Press, a general commercial printer in Orlando, FL, has selected a 4-color Speedmaster SM 52 with Anicolor inking unit over several digital options it had been evaluating. Ultimately, the owners of C&S determined that the Anicolor machine would enable the company to compete more effectively with short-run, nonvariable digital printing while steering clear of digital “click” charges amounting to more than $50,000 per month for the same productivity C&S already derived from its two conventional offset presses.
