Thirty three graphic arts companies were selected as recipients of 2011 Best Workplace in the Americas Awards by a committee of distinguished human resources experts from within the industry. A total of 14 companies received the coveted Best of the Best designation, while 19 earned Best Workplace honors.

Despite national unemployment rates that continue to hover above 9 percent, many printers still lament how difficult it is to find, and keep, skilled workers. Printing plant closures and staff downsizings due to the prolonged recession have alleviated the problem to some degree.
Agfa Graphics announced that the :Apogee Users Group meeting at GRAPH EXPO is rapidly filling up. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 12, from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. in room S106b in the South Building, Level 1 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Hopkins Printing has staked its future on cross-training. Commercial printing is a waning industry, but enthusiasm is waxing on the factory floor of Hopkins Printing. The reason is a cultural reboot that pushed employee skills and ideas to the forefront of what was once a more traditional top-down company. In the past two years, most employees have been trained in an additional one to two jobs and have implemented dozens of improvements that they devised.
“We work smarter and help each other work smarter every day,” says Mike VanAtta, a lead operator in the bindery and 19-year employee.

Eight golds, three silvers and one bronze would be quite a feat at an Olympic Games, but it is also the accomplishment of 12 pieces printed by Hopkins Printing at the 36th International Gallery of Excellence. This annual printing and graphic arts competition is held in Minneapolis and supported by the IAPHC.
