PITTSBURGH—Printing Industries of America (PIA) has announced the recipients of its 2011 InterTech Technology Awards. The technologies receiving this recognition have been judged as truly innovative and are expected to have a major impact on the graphic communications industry.
Entries in Printing Industries of America’s 2011 InterTech Technology Award program demonstrated great strides in technology for packaging software, inkjet printing, workflow automation, offset press efficiency, UV curing and variable-data printing. Eight innovative technologies were selected to receive the award.
PrintMailers, a Texas-based marketing communications service provider, has recently installed a six-color Komori Lithrone SX29 (LSX629) to support its turnkey marketing communications production facility. With its advanced automated features, the new Komori press supports PrintMailers’ commitment to control the quality of every job from start to finish, quickly and efficiently.
Seattle-based McCallum Print Group, which provides a wide range of integrated direct marketing services, has retrofitted Komori’s H-UV curing system on its LS640 sheetfed offset press. Because McCallum management believes that sustainable practices are critical for its business and its clients’ businesses as well, it sees the addition of Komori’s H-UV system as an integral part of an ongoing commitment to an efficient use of resources.
Freeport was given the press manufacturer’s Worldwide Makeready Achievement Award in recognition of the most plates changed and/or the most makereadies ever achieved in a 24-hour period on any Komori 16-page web press. It produced 155 press runs and changed 1,240 printing plates on two single-web 16-page presses.
Premier’s new eight-color, 40" Komori Lithrone perfecting press with UV capabilities replaces a 10-year-old 40" Komori six-color. “We produce a large amount of four-color work that’s printed on two sides, and the turnaround times that our customers require continue to shrink. We decided one way to satisfy these fast turnaround times is to go with a perfector,” said Chris Feryn, president of Premier Press.

It prints everything from brochures and direct mail pieces to book covers. A key driver in the decision was the high level of automation the press offers.
