ROLLING MEADOWS, IL—Komori Corp. reports it has resumed manufacturing operations in Japan following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country. As of March 22, normal operations resumed at the Tsukuba and Yamagata factories. The first shipment from the Tsukuba plant after the earthquake was a four-color Lithrone S40 that was shipped to China. The first shipment from the Yamagata factory was a four-color Lithrone S26 shipped to a Japanese user. Since that time presses have been shipped to customers in Japan, China, North America, Latin America, Europe and India.
It took only 36 days from the arrival of the first Komori System 38 web press components to the first commercial print run. “For short-run production of publications and catalogs, these are the most advanced heatset web offset presses in the world,” said James Pilcher, vice president of manufacturing.
The largest part of the investment is a Komori six-color plus aqueous coating 40" printing press, featuring a closed-loop production workflow. The company also upgraded its electronic prepress workflow and is in the final stages of a redesign of its offices.

Those lithographic printers walking the show floor earlier this month at Graph Expo in search of a bevy of heavy-iron, offset presses were sorely disappointed. With press manufacturers Heidelberg USA, Komori America and Mitsubishi Lithographic Presses opting to pass on this year's show, the South Hall at McCormick Place lacked the all-encompassing lineup of traditional press vendors that visitors in years past have come to expect.
